The Cycle Nuts 8& Bolts Funday at Tal!adega Gran Prix Raceway gave
racers and street riders a chance for low-pressure track time.
Fay rocks Idaho
Mi'e
By Clay Ught
COEUR D'ALENE,ID, JUNE 23
National Number 13 Mickey
Fay (Harley-Davidson 750)
nabbed Junior Pro Tim Stults
late in the 15-lap 750cc Expert/
junior/Pro-Am main event to win
the prestigious Couer d:Alene flat
track in which $1000 was up for grabs
to the winner of the main event.
Honda's Randy Green and Kirk
Strong launched a pair of water-cooled
Hondas into the lead in the 250cc
Pro-Am main event followed by Donald Wilson and Idaho riders Ricky
Henson (Yamaha) and Troy Norris
(Honda). Up front it was a three-way
battle for first place cash, which was
nearly $400 to win. Green settled into
the lead late in the race after shaking
off fellow Experts Strong and Wilson.
In the 500cc Pro-Am main, 600cc
singles were allowed by Promoter
Floyd Vincent, but after initial discussion, the largerdisplacemem machinery would stage,in row three for the
wain event. At the start, Idaho Expert
Arney Wick (Honda CR500) pushed
his motocross-based machine into
the lead followed by Fay, Green and
Wilson, who were aboard 600cc machines and were on the move through
traffic. Also working steadily up
through the 17-rider field was Pro-Am
rider Darrel Davis (Harley-Davidson),
Expert Randy Roose (Honda 600)
and Stults. Fay took the lead early in
the race, which left Wick to fend off
advances from Green. Green dropped
out of the race which moved Wick
into the number two slot for keeps,
but his domination of the class would
come to an end afcer winning the
500cc main for the past several years.
Third went to Wilson with Davis,
Roose and Stults filling the top six.
The evening's high-light came in
the 750cc combined Expert/junior/
Pro-Am main event, gridding many
National number holders from a five
state radius. Green and Dan Bennett
were looking for a piece of the $5000
purse which would go to the winner.
Fay won the (irst heat aboard a 600cc
Honda single, but when it came time
for the 17-rider main to stage, it was
Fay lining up his 750cc Harley. Stults
(Harley-Davidson 750) pushed his
750 to the front of the pack on the
opening lap of competition, while
Fay, Green, john Wincewicz (HarleyDavidson 750) and Strong gave chase.
Strong had problems, dropping to
10th, while up front it was Stults
doing a sensational job of holding off
Fay. Wick joined in the action and
made up a four-way battle for second
between himself, Green, Wincewicz
and 560cc ROlaX-mounted Wilson.
With just three laps to go, Stults was
overtaken by Fay and kissed an additional $600 goodbye. Fay went on to
win followed by Stults, Green, Wincewicz, Wick, Wilson, Bennett and
Roose.
