Micky Dymond increased his 125cc point lead with his 1-2 tally for the overall win in Michigan: it was his second win of the series. to take second place after seeing the Honda riders crash. Lechien dogged Bailey for a few laps before slipping by to finish second and securing third overall. Lechien's pass snatched from Bailey what would have been the overall victory. Ward once again had trouble starting and by the time he was able to work his way near the front the leaders were long gone. Kawasaki's Billy Liles finished the moto in fifth place while Storbeck brought his Yamaha across in sixth. ln me pits after the race, Bailey could only lament his loss. "I'm really bummed that Lechien passed me because that cost me the overall," he said. Johnson, however, exclaimed in victory, "You know David and Johnny . falling off today, well, that was their birthday present to me. It's an awful nice present. Both David and Johnny were riding better than me today and winning the overall was lucky. But luck is a part of racing." 125cc Michigan's Eddie Warren pushed ills Kawasaki to the front of the pack when the first 125cc moto started. Warren soon ran into problems, however, first being passed by Ricky Ryan and Donny Schmit and then crashing heavily on a downhill. Warren got going again in last place, but the mishap left him with a sore shoulder and some bruised ribs and he soon pulled off the track to regroup for the second moto. Dymond did not gate up frOnt, but he wasted little time moving up. By the IO-minute mark, Dymond had blown by Ryan and settled into a comfortable lead. Dym'ond faltered . briefly at the 20-minute mark as the heat had started to affect him and he was having trouble breathing through . his face mask, "I couldn't. breathe through my mask and when I went to pull it off my goggles came with it. And when I pulled off into the mechanic's area to get a new pair, Ryan passed me back." Ryan's lead didn't last long, though, as Dymond was able to pass him right back when Ryan missed a shift on the bottom of the course. Dymond David Bailey finished second overall behind Johnson with a 2-3 tally despite a midair collision with O'Mara in the second moto. Ron Lechien's 5-2 gave him third overall. took the moto win by seven seconds over Ryan and Holland. Holland made a move on Ryan on the white£lag lap and in fact passed him at one point, but Ryan was up to the challenge as he passed Holland back and held on for second place. Yamana's Scott Burnworth finished in the fourth position and Schmit flew past Bowen right at the finish line jump to snatch fifth place. Warren shot into the lead once again as the second moto got underway. Warren's bumps and bruises soon got the better of him as he faded to an eventual II th, but not before he was able to lead for five laps of the second moto. At that point A.]. Whiting, Bowen and Dymond all found a way around the game Warren. Whiting was able to hold the lead for twO laps before Bowen found a way around. Bowen went on to win the moto by 13 seconds over Dymond, who passed Whiting in the closing laps of the moto. Holland and Honda rider Larry Brooks rounded out the top five. • Results 500: 1.
