We couldn't have don~ it without you. Johnson snares MontereyST . By Mike Vancil MONTEREY, CA, JUNE 14 Two restarts were necessitated in the final500cc Expert event at Monterey County Fairground's short track when Craig Johnson, who eventually won, raised his hand to signal not ready. It appeared genuine, but nonetheless: it did negate the lead of, first, Dean Vinceiet, then Frank Sanchez. Referee Jack Barton Jr. warned Johnson that he had just used up his last "not ready" signal. On the signal to get in gear and be ready for the l~ght, Johnson and Vincelet jumped over the line and were immediately penalized to the corner four penalty line. At the long-awaited green, Todd Bridges jumped out [0 an early lead. Bridges'lead lasted only into lap two as he fell off in the first corner. The lead was then taken over by Sanchez. Sanchez showed bits of his 1985 polished shon track style; however, he hasn't been racing and tired too soon' to the pressures from first Johnson and then Vincelel. Thl;ir charge forward from the back row stan took only three laps. Johnson kept the gas on and powered to the win. In other class action, Cory Perreault was able to snag the victory in the popular 500cc Junior class final. He was involved in a first corner jam-up but no one went down. In prior weeks, Perrault has ridden two classes but on this particular night, the KTM was being quite reluctant to start. Chasing the Gatsby Racing Teamsponsored Perreault to the checkers was Joe Carrera aboard his Gilroybased Suzuki four-stroke. : Kerker Exhaust Systems begin at $i79.00.
