Pletzing Briggs at 'MS Speedway By Scott Daloisio SAN'BERNARDlNO, CA, JUNE 25· .When Robert "Gater" Pfetzing draws the pole position in a Scratch race all of his competitors draw a deep sigh and try to find a glimmer of hope from an mherwise bleek looking situation. That is just what happened in the Cycle Rider, Inc. ScralCh main event at John LaDouceur's Inland MOlOrcycie Speedway Wednesday. The slick· gating PfelZing drew the pole and led the main event from the lapes all the way lO theSid Sullon checkered flag. Pfetzing (Valvoline/Kal-Gard/ O'Neal/Team Swollen/Trackstar Equipment Weslake) burst 0(( the line ahead of Steve Lucero, Shawn McCOnnell and defending National Champion Alan "Crazy" Christian. McCOnnell quickly shot into second as he raced inside Lucero coming off turn two, but Lucero took the spot back in the next bend. Pfening main· tained his advanlage throughout while Lucero was forced lO hold 0(( the detemined McCOnnell. PfelZing took the win, his first of the year at . IMS, by three lengths. Second spot went to Lucero with McConnell breathing down his neck. Tony Briggs (Justice Bromers/K&:N Jawa) made one of his infrequent 1986 appearances a profitable one by winning the Handicap main off the 2O-yard line. He was second out o( the gate behind Wayne LeulZ at the stan o( the main, but rocket~ by LeulZ and into the point position as they came 0(( turn two. McCOnnell also got past LeulZ before the end of the opener and went about chopping down 8ri~' early advantage. Mcr Connell closed to his rear tire on lap three and tried lO use the inside lO pass on lap (our. Briggs held McCOnnell off and was able lO keep him at bay until the checkered flag. Third spot was laken by Rich Sweaney who was closing on the two leaders on the final lap. Ken Berry (JBeS Suppliers Weslake) took home the Second Division trophy after turning a smooth five-lap ride. Mark Brooks took second in the main with Jimmy Gentile third. Dana Dumond (Malcolm Smith/ Torco/Bast Const. Frank, Murray top CarlsbadMX By Edward Stovin CARLSBAD, CA, JUNE 15 Billy Frank cruised to a 500cc Pro double moto win at Carlsbad Raceway, while Pete Murray had to fight for top honors in the 250cc Pro class. The 125cc Intermediate, 125 and 250cc Pro combined start showed plenty o( action as Murray, riding a M-Slar, took the holeshot in the (irst molO, trailed by Ti Swartz, Jim 'Perry and Brian Rutledge. While Murray set the pace, Perry rode in Murray's shadow as the pair put dislance on the (ield. Perry eventually powered past Murray, as Colin Karcher began to move up, unaware of a (our rider ballie (or fourth place behind. Soon 125cc Intermediate Chris Young moved up lO fourth, leaving Robot Rogers, SwarlZ and Je(( Healey lO fight (or (ifth. Anhe checkered flag, Perry flew by for the win (ollowed by a strong charging Young, Karcher, Murray, Healey, Rogers and Swartz. In the second molO, Rogers blasted into the early lead (ollowed by Murray and Perry. Murray took the (irst available opportunity to move into the lead, while close behind Rogers and Perry fought (or second. The heavy pace put down by Perry gave him the advanlage, as he set out after Murray. Unexpe, etedly, Rogers pulled off, leaving thud and fourth to Swartz '3od Healey. On the white flag lap, Per, pulled up along side o( Murray, but Murray kept his composure and the lead as he took the win followed by Perry, SwarlZ, Chris Young, and Healey. Results 60 BEG: ,. Lackey-Daley duel at Sand Hill By Lee Denlinger BRENTWOOD, CA, JUNE 27 Suzuki-mounted Russ Daley took first place overall in the Vet Masters' race at Sand Hill tonight. Riding a hard-packed track that was slick in spots from watering, Daley's win was hard-fought down to the checkers. "When Brad (Lackey) passed me over the doubles on the outside in the first moto," explained Daley, "I knew that I would have to lake control in the second moto to get the win." In the ne)"'ly laid out track of jumps, rockers, hairpin curves and sweepers, control was the name of the game. In the first moto, Daley had a near perfect gate and was first around the corner going intq the sweeper. But his lead was quickly challenged by (ormer world motocross champ Brad Lackey. While Daley was laking to the air in the doubles, Lackey cut a path to the outside line where the distance was shorter and the ground more level. Once in front, Lackey took command to the checkers followed by Daley and Honda-rider Steve Lawrence. Determined not lO repeat his mislake in the second moto, Daley again took the holeshot and the lead, but this time kept it by outmaneuvering Lackey through the turns and the jumps until the white flag lap. Then Lackey made his move and charged hard. The yellow and green machines Jocked together over the jumps and when Daley overshot the corner two turns from the (inish, Lackey cut to the inside and edged ahead. Daley quickly recovered and powered his bike next to Lackey's. When Lackey overshot the hairpin turn into the (inish, Daley clipped past him on the ~nside and raced the next 30 feet to lake the checkers and first overall. With Sand Hill Pro class regulars George Hopper, Terry Boslard and Danny Paladino on the injury list, the field was wide open lOnight in Pro racing. Rod Habig piloted his Kawasaki (or a 3-1 tally to give him first place overall in the·I25cc Pro class. It was a hard-earned win as a clean gate' and the holeshot in the first moto were quickly given up lO Suzuki rider Russ Scott. Once in the lead, Scott was able to keep the edge to the checkers. Habig couldn't get it together and, unable to challenge the leader, found himseH passed by Yamaha·mounted Ty Earl in the mid· field turns. Habig was a more decisive rider in the second moto, and after laking the lead, was able lO keep it (or the win. The only real challenge came during the second lap when Earl tied him up on a corner in lhe second lap, but was unable to captitalize on the strategy (or a pass. Habig stretched out to a five bikelength lead and took the checkers with a three-second lead. He was followed by Earl, whose 2·2 wins gave him second overall and Scott, who took third overall with a 1-3 lally. Results 60: 1. Eric Thompson (Hon); 2. Blaine Willis (Suz). SO BEG: 1. Sisemore slashes Auburn Spdwy By Bill Spencer AUBURN, CA, JUNE 20 Jimmy Sisemore doubled under the lights at the Gold Country Fairgrounds in Auburn on the regular Friday night, NorCaI tour, that has been anything but regular. Chief prolagonist in the north, of late, has been Eddie Ingles who won both events last week. This week, he couldn't make either main, much the same as Sisemore was unable to qualify last week for either main, but great racing indicates good times for Class A speedway motorcycle racing. The first Scratch heat brought out Ingels who had just won another main at Baylands and gated (or the heat win having to beat Sam Bast in the process. Bast held an even line until the last lap when Steve Craw(ord caught up too quickly and laid into the big guy, causing a checkered red. Bast got the transfer and Crawford the ouch. Pat Linn and the Petrich Cycle Weslake took the outside for the second heat but couldn't get the right hook·up going, while Ban Bast took the Bast Bros. Welding special to the win over Marc Prince on the Harry's Shop special. John Houston Jr., got a real good gate on the Classic Be FashionlTrick Gas machine in heat three and held off Mike Delacy's number one Bicycle Shop Wessy. Paul Orlandi and Steve Martin hooked up for some fun racing in heat four, but it was the long, lanky one for the checkers, as Orlandi nipped out Martin in another one his famous rim riding maneuvers. The first Scratch semi was just plain excellent with Bart Bast styling the whole distance to a wheelstand win in front of Delacy with Ingels unable to get' around and of( to the' consi with Orlandi. Sisemore got the gate in the second semi and was gone, while Sam Bast and Marc Prince exchanged bumps with Houston dosing at the checkers, but not enough for a pass but a throwaway in the first comer. Sisemore won easily with Prince along for the main event. Lining up the front straight in the of
