Nelson wins Sand HillMX By Lee Denlinger BRENTWOOD, CA, MAY 30 Nelson Trick Productions (NTP) opened Sand Hill Ranch to Friday night motocross tonight. Promoted by head referee Third-place finisher Ken Olson (758) leads Mike Bell in the 125cc Pro class at Delta Park MX. Bell past Olson and finished second. main event, but Harsha and Larry Legarra tangled which caused one of many, many restarts. After all Lhe chaos, only Green Fay and Strong sat on row one while the penalty area was jam-packed. Fay vaulted into Lhe lead on Lhe sixth and final take, but would only enjoy his lead for Lhree laps. That's when Green gunned down the National umber 13 plate holder. Fay returned the favor several times in a heated battle that was joined by Strong, who got too close to Green, which sent Green and his National Number 24 Honda sprawling to the dirt and moved Strong • into second with one lap LO go. Strong closed in on Fay with the white last lap nag in sight and made a spectacular pass on one of America's best TT riders to take the lead and hold it LO the finish over Fay, Fisher, Duane Gerrar, Legarra, Zirbel, Wilson and Harsha. Anderson wins Delta Park MX By Derryl Anderson PORTLAND, OR, MAY 29 Longview shop owner Jim Anderson rode his Yamaha to a perfect 1-1 finish in the 125cc Pro class of the motocross held • 58. tonight at Portland's Delta Park. Constant watering helped keep Lhe track in good shape all night. In the first moLO Kenny Olsen (O'NeiIlATAK) took his Kawasaki to the front foHowed by Anderson, Mike BeJl and Ernie Roberts. Everyone was close as Anderson pressured OlSen all through Lhe infield. Anderson almost got by on the new 1800 berm in the middle, but Olsen shut the door on him. Anderson was righ on Olsen's rear tire as they went over ·the tower table LOp jump and up the back section. Finally he was able to blow by Olsen coming down the whoop section heading for the big starting line jump. On lap five Roberts fell on the new berm, but he was up and running quickly. Meanwhile, Anderson built 1,11111. 4Q-yaJ:d lead on t)1set')'and Lhe: others. On lap six Bell was aJl over Olsen looking for an opening that never appeared. He kept the pressure on until lap nine when his rear tire went flat. However, instead of pulling over, Bell continued LO run at a fair pace hoping to beat Roberts to the checkered nag. In order at Lhe nag it was Anderson, Olsen, Bell and a super close Roberts. In Lhe final moLO it was Olsen again getting the holeshot ahead of Roberts, Anderson and Bell. Bell got by Anderson, but the pass was repaid within a lap and Anderson went gl.\nning for Roberts..In the middle of lap two Olsen lost hiS front end on the new berm and everyone blew by, even Lhough he was up quickly. By lap Lhree Anderson was in Lhe lead and not looking back. Anderson built up a fair sized lead, but everyone remai ned cI ose Lhroughou tthe rest of the race. The order remained the same right to the checkered flag; it was Anderson, Bell, Roberts and Olsen. In the first moto of the I25cc B class it was holeshot artist Darren Rogers doing it again as he swept everyone off the line and went wire-to-wire. Behind him off Lhe line was Bobby Steiner, Dean Brundidge, David Browning, Ed Jensen and the oLhers. Rogers was looking good as he continued LO stretch his lead over Steiner and the othe.rs. On lap two, Andy Syring got by the Kawasaki of Sean Riesterer and on the next lap Browning and David Hilton moved up a notch and the finishing order was set. At Lhe checkered nag it was Rogers, Steiner, Browning, Brundidge, HilLOn, Jensen and Riesterer. Rogers got the .scratch in the final molO followed by HilLOn, Brundidge, Steiner and the others. WiLhin a lap and a half Brundidge moved up a spot and Riesterer fell down. Rogers had about 40 yards on Steiner and Lhe oLhersaJI remained within 10-15 yards of each other. With a lap LO go syring went down and the finishing order went Rogers, Steiner, Hilton, Brundidge, Jensen, Browning, Riesterer and Syring. Results WEE PEE WEE; 1. Robert Holt~rew (Yam); 2. Dan Nelson, close LO 100 races and double that number of spectators turned out to make the evening season opener an overwhelming success. The featured event was the hot contest between two Y-Zingers, ridden by first time racers Jeannine Nelson and Mike Hopper. As the gate fell, Hopper took the lead and· the holeshot, pursued by a persistent Nelson. Hopper opened up an impressive amount of space in the first lap after Nelson's machine spun out of a turn. But persistence and consistency paid off as Nelson closed the gap and when Hopper bit Lhe dust on lap two, Nelson was Lhere to pass pass him and take the win! The Pros were also crowd pleasers LOnight as Jon King dusted his competitors in Lhe 125cc Pro class. In the first moLO, Danny Paladino (Contra Costa Kawasaki) leaped out of the gates with Jon King flying past him LO take the holeshot. After taking on Paladino on a left berm before the back sweeper, Terry Bostard (Concord Yamaha/Malcolm Smith/Scott USA/PJ l/Oils/Dirt Riders Detergent) challenged King. Bostard pushed Kingon the outside with Paladino taking closely. With five laps to go, Bostard set up King, but King was able LO cut him off. On the white flag lap,.Bostard again went to the outside and the Honda and Yamaha paralleled one another over the double jumps. Going imo the corner, Bostard cut too sharply LO the inside, and crashed. Paladino took over the second place slot as King passed the checkers; Bostard came in Lhird. In Lhe second moLO, Jon King powered out of the gate, but swung to the outside, giving Bostard the holeshot. A Lhree-way race quickly emerged among Bostard, King, and Palapino. The short, tight track limited the number of lines available to the racers and each rider wai ted for a mistake. At the beginning of Lhe fourLh' lap, Bostard spun out and King swooped into the first place slot. Before Bostard could recover. Paladino, Gallagher and Christian powered passed him. Once in Lhe lead, King opened up Lhe Lhrottle to put space between him and Paladino taking second in Lhe 125cc Pro class. In the 25Occ/Open mixed Pro class MX, Rich Mythen (Diablo. Sports/Cycle Gear) took the 100% payback on his 500cc Honda. In the first moLO, George Hopper (DH Cycles-Modesto/Malcolm Smith) tore out of the gates, grabbed the line to take the holeshot, but relinquished the lead. Bostard's 250 Yamaha in Lhe back sweeper. On the following lap, Hopper's Yamaha started running too rich so he puHed out of Lhe race. As Bostard opened up an unchallenged lead. Vernon For: syLh and MyLhen battled for the second place slot. MyLhen tracked Fo~syth until Lhe white flag. Then MyLhen opened up the throttle, set ForsyLh up on the jumps, Lhen took him on from the outside for a pass. Bostard took first with My then and ForsyLh following in that order passed the checkers. In the second moLO, My then got Lhe holeshot followed by Clayton Blood (Hon) and ForsyLh. NeiLher Hopper nor Bostard ran the second moLO, leaving the field to three combatants. In the second lap, ForsyLh set Blood up for a pass after Lhe jumps and passed him at the corner. It wasa My then, Forsyth, Blood finish. Mythen's 2-1 scores gave him first place overall in Lhe mixed Pro class race. ForsyLh took second overall with a 3-2 tally, while Blood settled for Lhird overall'with a 4-3 set of scores. Results PEE WEE: 1. Jeannine Nelson (Y-Z); 2. Mike Hopper (Y -Z). 60: 1.
