With 10 laps to go, Lavado had a 3.5·second lead over Wimmer, who did most of his passing on the down· hill right-hand Fahrerlagerkurve. That's where he displaced Ricci for second. Lavado kept the lead constant just above four seconds until the 20th lap when he started to pull away. Balde had passed Ricci on the 17th lap and Pons had dropped way 0[£ the pace. The checkered nag came for Lavado eight seconds before Wimmer saw it. Another three seconds back was a content BaJde with Ricci dropping five seconds behind the Frenchman and another eight ahead of fellow Honda rider Sarron on the Rothmans Honda SR250. (Continued from page 17) "But I got stuck with backmarkers. About four laps from the end I had this problem in the chicane of it loading up when I downshifted to first." He added that he thought he could stay with Sarron and Baldwin. "The next jump is up to Wayne and Randy then Eddie and Freddie. I just have to get my confidence up." Not having confidence in his physical condition is Spencer's problem and it's one that he wants fixed. "Rijeka (an extremely hot and physically deman~ingtrack) is about 50-50 right now. It would be better to cure the problem and come back strong than ride at less than 100%," said Spencer. But whether Rothmans and HRC (Honda Racing Corporation) agrees with this 'extremely sensible viewviewpoint remains to be seen. The story of the 250cc GP is very simple. Carlos Lavadogot his Yamaha started and Martin Wimmer didn't. From the standing start Lavado completed the first two laps in about 3:08. Wimmer did the same two laps in about 3: 16. The difference is roughly eight seconds. Lavado won the 25lap, 66-mile race by 8.01 seconds. In the lead by the second lap, Lavado was never challenged. Ricci ran at the front of a trio in second with Balde and Pons while Dominique Sarron was fifth ahead of the popular trio of German Manfred Herweh, Austrian Siegfried Minich, and· Wimmer from nearby Munich. Wimmer was seventh on the fifth lap, fifth on the ninth lap, and into third on the 12th lap. Lavado, Ricci, Wimmer, Balde, Pons and Herweh was the order at the halfway point. Wimmer turned in the fastest lap of the race, a 1:27.18, averaging 108.88 mph on the 13th lap. . 500cc: 1. Eddie LAwson (Yem); 2. WIIYne Gar_ (Hon); 3. Randy Mamola (Yaml; 4.
