Knuth steals WapellaHS By Bill Holt WAPELLA, IL, JUNE I Rick Knuth powered his Yamaha to his second scrambles win of the season at the Bloomington-Normal M/C-sponsored event in Wapella today. This was no, easy feat when you consider that Audie Huff has had a lock on all of the other forms of dirt tracks in the 500ccc class in District 17 this season. The Minis led off the show and Ron Lugari led the pack into tum nu ber one with Scotty Huff and his Honda in hot pursuit. Lugari styled his way to the win with Huff settling for an unaccustumed second and Steve Hall holding off Bryan Graybeal for third. Bart Scmulback proved LO be the combination to beat in the 125ccclass when Huff brought his stock MX machine 10 the scrambles event and found that itdidn't have the horses to keep up with the leaders.DaveSTanfield came out of the pack early to challenge Schmulbam for the lead, but seuled for second spot holding off Danny ShouOer and Greg JooP in the third and fourth spots. Gary Kennedy went down hard on the first lap of the 200cc heat and really rang his bell in the process and all this while holding a four bike lead in the last turn. When the green flag flew for the final he seemed to have put his act back together since he and Greg GriUin led the crowd into tum one with Terry Leffler in tow. Griffin proved to be the man to beat as he pulled away in the final laps arid Le£fler found some unused horses down the long fronl straight on the white flag lap and got by Kennedy to take the hold on second. Kennedy held oU a late charging Bob Collier for third. Audie HU Jr. parked the Honda 250 for the season and left the field open for a new leader after dominating the class for the last two seasons. There were a host of pretenders to the throne, but when the dust settled on the checkered flag Todd Williamson had put his Anderson Kawasaki in the lOp spot. As Williamson pulled away the real battle developed for second with Tom SutLOn squeezing by Dan Carter in the late laps and holding on for second with Shawn Wade looking on from a close fourth. The 400cc class turned into two separate races. The lead battle saw Bob Collier and Les Schackman on the S&S Repair Hondas dicing for the entire race with Collier making his rocket holeshol hold for the win. The third place fight pitted Shawn Wade and Peter Bamosky in a hOI duel from wire·to-wire. Wade held on for third, Barnosky fourth and Chris Hardesty fifth. Rick Knuth's Yamaha had to have been rocket powered to get that kind of a holeshol. He rocketed into the lead towing ~ Bertilino and Audie
