Green, Strong storm Sidewinders By Clay Ught CLACKAMAS, OR, MAY 30 National number holders Randy Green and Kirk Strong wasted the competition during AMA TT action at .Oregon Sidewinders c1ubgrounds in CLackamas. Green breezed to a win in the 2S01 SOOcc Pro main event while Strong nabbed Honda-mounted Mickey Fay on the last lap of the S001750cc Pro main to take a win in the most exciting race thus far in the young AMA District 28 season. WashingLOn riders Green and Strong gave the competition the onetwo punch in the first 2S0/S00cc heat race, taking direct transfers to the 12rider, l2-lap main event as did ProAm rider Rick Stocks.on a Rotax and rookie Expen Randy Roose on a Yamaha in heat two. The third heat was the evening's best heat as Expens Jeff Harsha and Many Zirbel waged a ballie for the transfer spots ahead of Californian Mike McDonnell and Idaho's Troy Norris. Heat four went the way of Junior Bob Klum with Danny Bell gelling econd. Green came back to trounce the best Open heat race, winning over N.ational Number 78 Donald Wilson to sit the pole for the Open main event on the Simpson/Megacycie/BeI-Ray Honda 600 while the fireworks exploded at . nearby Portland's Rose Festival. For the first time this season, time trials were added to the program, gearing up for next week's big $SooO 'IT REgional. In the 2S0/S0Occ ranks . it was Green posting fast time on his Honda waterpumper with a IS.30 followed by National Number holders Del Schnitzer (JS.64), Strong (1S.67) and Harsha (IS.77). Many Zirbel shattered the clocks in the Open category with his 14.62 on the Lou Kinish Triumph 7S0. Second to Zirbel was . the 14.86 of Green and his 600cc Honda. The only other riders LO land 14-second bracket times' were Experts Ryan Fisher (14.92), Fay (14.94) and Wilson (14.99). Much like the season's opener, Amateur classes ran during the program in moto style. Bul!aco rider John BredfieJd used a I, L-2 to LOp the 2S0cc class ahead of the 2-2· L from Mall Holden on a Honda CRI2S and similar-mounted J.P. Simpson, who tallied a 3-3-3 for a third. Simonson earlier stormed the 80cc II-year-old and up class with a clean sweep (I-I. I) to beat Paul Morgan (Honda), who went 2-2-2. The only other rider to sweep the "moLO format" class was AMA 60cc Amateur champion Ryan Anderson, winner of th.e 7-Ll-yearold 0·80cc class with 1-1-1 rides. Troy Yeo hammered the Open Amateur class, run in heat, semi and main event form. Green sat the pole int he 250/S00cc Pro final which lined up five Expens, two Juniors and five Pro-Am'license holders. Harsha led inLO turn one at the £lash of the green light, closely followed by Green, Klum and ProAm rider Stocks. By lap twO, Green had overtaken Harsha for the lead and by the halfway point had pushed his Honda into an untouchable lead while Harsha fought off Strong, Stocks, Klum and Roose. Stocks was the surprise of the evening, pushing past seasoned Expens Harsha and Strong to settle into second where he would finish. Green took an easy win with third going the way of Strong ahead of Harsha, Klum, Roose and Expert John Clayton on a Yamaha.
