If . Christian' finished - s«ond, they would run-off with him off for first. H he finished third or fourth, they would run-off against each other for the title. But, Christian beld off a determined Sandona to take the title for the third consecutive year. Oxley then claimed second when he beat Hicks in a run-off. Christian was elated with his win. He beamed while doing a television interview and said, "I won it the first year, but last year I got lucky. This year I wanted it again, plus they told me I could keep the trophy (a huge perpetual trophy) if I won it this year." He then went on, like many of the competitors, to praise Hicks for his sterling performance on the night. Results POINTS: 1. AIen ChriMlan (Weal 13; 2. IlrMl Oxley (Weal 12; 3. Christian tab at 'MS Speedway By Scott Daloisio SAN BERNARDINO, CA, JUNE II The Third Annual Speedway Magazine Cup took place before a sizeable crowd at john LaDouceur's Inland Motorcycle 46- Speedway Wednesday night, and for the third consecutive year, Alan "Crazy" Ouistian took home the coveted crown. Two of Christian's main competilOrs for the title met in the first event of the meetin~. Brad Oxley easily cruised to the Win while "F1yin' Mike" Faria failed to finish. Before the start of the race Faria had clutch problems and he borrowed Ronnie Correy's bike. Unfortunately, Correy's bike also let him down and Faria's title hopes were pretty dim: Christian (STP/Valvoline/CalFab/BeIi/Smith/Brant Eng.!Advantage Boats/Mikuni/Hi-PointlTerrycable/Tsubaki/Barnett Weslake) waltzed to a win in event two. Another of tltt' f'aWltites, St~·hacero:~lI·itr the race and scored zero. In event three John Sandona, who a few wee~s earlier won the Bruce Penhall Dasslc at IMS, knocked down leader Gene Woods and was kicked out of the [irst race. After three races, three of the major competitors had failed to score. The final event of the first round looked like it was going to be a win for Doug Nicol, but he had the box come unplugged and he coasted silently to the infield, allowing Shawn McConnell to win. Oxley then pushed his Weslake to an important win when he edged Christian in event five. That gave Oxley a one-point lead. Lucero got on the winning track by taking event six, but Faria had more problems with his own bike and dropped out of the meeting. A wild crash in turn one of event seven featured Gary Hicks, Keith Larsen and Nicol. All restarted and Hicks took third giving him three points from two outings. McConnell stayed abreast of Oxley when he edged Dwyer to close out the second round. McConnell and Oxley met in event nine and they faced Lucero and Sandona. when the dust had settled, the win went to Lucero, trailed by Sandona, McConnell and Oxley. That sent the point standings into a mad scramble. Christian made it two wins on the night with an impressive victory over reserve Jeff Johnson while Hicks won a thrilling was over Sweaney in event II. Oxley was third out of the gate in event 13, but by the end of lap one, he was in command for another win giving him nine points. Event 15 was a pivotal race as il matched McConnell, Christian, Hicks and Woods. McConnell got the gate and seemingly had the win tucked away when his rear tire went flat near the end of lap three. That gave the lead to Hicks and the youngster turned back the determined ef[orts of Christian. If McConnell had not suffered tbe flat, he would have won the meeting as he took his last ride. Oxley won his fourth ride of the night when he edged Sweaney. Now all he could do was sit back and watch, hoping that Christian finished no better than second in his final ride. The despondant McConnell 'won his last ridle but it was too little, too late. Hicks, who by now had the crowd on his side, scored a very popular and decisive win over Lucero in event 19.
