.. 2SOCC Motocross World Championship Series: Round 5 THE ANATOMY OF Whatley doubles in Czecho ROAD RACING. rOVAZSKA BYSTRICA, CZECHOSLOVAKIA, MAY 25. Cagiva's Jeremy, Whatley stormed up the World 250cc Motocross Championship table with two resounding wins in Czechoslovakia. Whatley took his factory mount to a 40 point maximum score in front of 40,000 sun-drenched Czech enthusiasts on the spectacular and hilly Povazska Bystrica ciIcuit. Saturday ni,ght saw a torrential downpour for much of the night, which threatened to turn the previously dusty conditions of qualification into a quagmire for racing. ' However, Sunday morning dawned with warm temperatures and warm sunshine and the circuit soon started to dry out. Starting procedure for GPs dictates a five-second board for riders under starters' orders but in Czechoslovakia they held the gate for an unbelievable 12 to 15 seconds before letting it drop and Michele Fanton stormed up the hill into the lead followed by Gertjan Van Doorn, Ranguelov and Whatley. Watson retired on lap five having caught a .post, damaging his rear brake pedal. He pulled in for his mechanic to sort itout but lost a lotof time and eventually pulled out. Whatley, meanwhile, chased after the Yamaha man Fanton and set about reducing his lead. By lap eigl:lt the Briton was with him a'ld'on one of the fast downhill sections hej umped inside Fanton and took the only line available from him. Fanton was later seen complaining about Whatley's move but they never touched. Certainly he had no answer to Whatley's riding as he pushed the Cagiva further ahead of the field to lead by eight seconds. Surprise package Dimitar Ranguelov from Bulgaria brought his Kawasaki through to second spot on lap 12 to put more pressure on Fanton. The Eastern Block rider has not been seen on the GP circuit since 1984. Hard riding Italian Michele Rinaldi (Suzuki) had to come from the back yet again and came from 20th on lap one up to 10th byJap six and right behind World Championship leader Jacky Vimond. It took the Italian two laps to overcome the Frenchman and then the Suzuki man went on to claim fourth at the £lag. Vimond looked very lack-lustre and eventually came home seventh. And so it was that Whatley won his first GP race since the British GP in 1984. With Fanton passing Ranguelov on the finish line and Finaldi fourth and Van Doorn in fifth. Race two got underway with another long hold on the start gate but this time it was Ranguelov to the fore with Fanton second and Whatley third at the first corner. Whatley was second within a further 100 yards and then outbraked Ranguelov into the finish area to take the lead at the end of the opening circuit. Whatley seized his opportunity and after taking the lead proceeded to dominate the race with a IO-second advantage at the midway point over Vimond, who had slipped ahead of Ranguelov and Fanton. But Vimond had no answer on this occasion to the speed of the Cagiva works runner, and it was again Rinaldi who became (Continued to page 73) [c.I',:e,] (j!~ THE NISSAN 200 July 12 arid 13, 1986 Laguna Seca Raceway, Monterey, CA ACamel Pro Series National Championship • The Bell Superbike Oassi( On Saturday THE MEN: THE MACHINES: sula, laguna Seca RIKIWlIY is a riden' COUlSe.
