THE WAR GETS HOTTER AT WILLOW SPRINGS· INTERNATIONAL RACEWAY LANCASTER -June will be bustin' out all over at Willow Springs International Raceway. In fact. track owner Bill Huth may be celebrating the Fourth of July prematurely when he rolls out the fifth edition of the Formula U.S.A. Gran Prix series on Sunday. June 29. "There will be some fireworks," Huth said, "because the point race is flipping around like a stack of hot cakes." Sponsored by Budweiser, Toyota and Coca-Cola, the Formula finds Jim Vreeke and his Yamaha in the lead for the first time this se.ason with 63 points after finishing second behind winner Doug Toland and his Suzuki in the fourth round of the series. Earl Roloff Jr. thus fell out of the top rung for the first time this year, but he trails Vreeke by only one point with 62. Roloff was lucky not to fall further behind, what with springing an oil leak near ~he end of the race. But he barely hung on to finIsh thord, whIch was good for 13 points as compared to Vreeke's 16. By becoming the first rider to win two Formulas, Toland jumped into a tie for third with SCOIl Gray and his Suzuki at 40 points each. Malcolm Hill and his Yamaha aren't too far off the pace at 29. Gray and Hill might even be closer if, they had been able to ride in the fourth race, but they had to sit that one out with injuries suffered at Sears Point. Gray had vowed his "Godzilla" was going to get Roloff's "Terminator" in the last race, but Vreeke stepped in and played the villain's role for him. Roloff, the San Diegan who has become one of the most popular riders on Willow Springs front, was looking for air in his tires in the second and third races. First, the fronttire was partially deflated to knock Roloff out of victory contelJlion. Then, the rear tire went hay-wire to cost him another possible win. He won the opening race of the series. however. "My bike is close to stock," Roloff said. "I have to keep it off the grenade mode by not racing it too much. It may not be fasl. but it's not last. " Vreeke has won the last three races of the Kerker Superbike series, anot!)er feature of the 12-race Willow Springs monthly program. Toland edged him in the first of the Kerker series.
