.. , hjs sqift, lin~gebroke Wp tl;u;n ~r vais and Murphy exchanged second repeatedly. On the last lap Mercier wheelied the length of the pi t straight to celebrate his first heat victory while Gervais held o[f the battling pair of Murphy and Lusby for second. '·Smurphy" was third, Lusby fourth, Leroux fifth and Gray-Wheeler, on the only production-racer specification bi ke a t the front, a tTOng sixth. Heat two was drier, although the track was dirty in spots due to offtrack excursions by the cars during supporting events. Once again, Mercier jumped into an ever-increasing leadand it looked like theoveraJl win would be his. Another battle shaped up for second with Gervais and Murphy leading a pack that included Lusby, Roy Hare, McMurter (with his bike repaired), Dave Schlosser on his endurance GSXRIIOO, Gray-Wheeler and the GSXR of Steve Nelson. The battle for second assumed new importance when Mercier crashed in "the chute" at over 100 mph on lap four, bouncing off the guard rail twice. The amazed corner workers ran to move the GSXR 0[£ the track, only to have a quick-recovering Mercier beat them to the bike. As the leaders moved onto their sixth lap Gervais had a few bikelengths lead over the sparing pair of Murphy-Lusby, while Hare was holding off Nelson and McMurter. But rain had started to fall at the far end of the track, taking down Nelson, Gray-Wheeler and David Grummet in quick succession. The red flag was displayed, and the results declared official. Gervais had won the second heat, and combined with his first heat second place, he took the $6000 first prize cheq ue. Gervais' results were even more impressive considering that he hadn't raced since a crash at the AMA Pocono National almost a year ago. The TZ750 that Gervais rode had been hastily reclaimed from a Government museum where it had been on display for the past few years, ever since Gervais got his Suzuki RG500 from England. When Gervais learned that he wouldn't have the parts he needed for his Mk. 10 RG in time for Mosport, he and tuner Alex Mayes received permission to remove the Castroll ShoeilDunlop TZ from the Ontario Science Centre for a week's return to racing. The Tuesday after the Victoria Day Sprints, the bike went back in it's glass case in the "Transportation Through the Ages" exhibition.. When the points scores from the two heats were compiled, hard-eharging Murphy wound up second on his McBride's/Dainese/Brooklin/Weldrite GSX. So far this season Murphy has had lousy luck including an expensive week at Daytona, so second represented some welcome income as well as a return to late '85 form. East coast superbike up-and-eomer Lusby was pleased to wind up third. his first good result after a heart-breaking crash while in third at the Mid-Ohio AMA National last summer. Endurance ace Hare was fourth, Nelson benefited from the last lap, red flag call-back to finish fifth even though he crashed and Schlosser was si'Xth, not bad considering his bike suffered from carb and ignition trouble and never ran quite right. Most popular racer over the weekend was Brooklin Cycle's Paul MacMillan, who continued to amaze on his Honda VFR750 Imerceptor. In Pro 750cc Production, MacMillan battled throughout the final with Pro 600cc winner AI Royer on a Bob's Motorsports Suzuki RG500. MacMillan led from the start, but Royer passed at mid race and led MacMillan by inches going into the last lap. •• I" • •• - ••••• - ... oJUNE 28thING •CA SATURDAY, to CARLSBAD, MIA la"CTIONID The International Event of the Year!
