He did look happy, though, as he won 750cc Production, Superbike and Formula One. Dick led each race froQl start to finish except Superbike. It looked like Steve Crevier was in a position of power during the early part of their race, bu"t a long slide going into the hairpin ended Crevier's hopes. Ken Stobbart kept a firm hold on second place wi th Gary Berge resigned to third. Unfortunatel y, Berge ran into traction problems going through the esses and finished the race off the track. This allowed Al McAlduff to move up to third. Crevier got it back together in time for the Formula One battle. He was slowed down enough that he never got past Dick, but he managed to keep SLObbart at bay until the checkered £lag. The 750cc Production action centered around the fight for second between Darryl Fletcher and Joe Pittman. Pi ttman took over on the second lap and looked good. Fletcher was just biding his time and at the haHway point was back in second place and did not let go. There is something about the way water sprays off the wheel wells on a sidecar rig that enhances the impression of speed. While the' finishing order was established during the [irst lap, the procession still held the spectator's interest throughout the race. Bob Lovick and Nick Falcos beat out current champions, John Wildman and Harry Rihela. Peering through the fog at the Formula Two race, you might think that you had changed race tracks. The struggle for supremacy was between two dirt trackers and a motocross machine. Randy Green led the way on his slightly modified Honda dirt tracker, followed by Larry Taylor on a CR500. Third went to Randy Roose. When asked how they liked road racing, all the dirt riders declared it to be lots of fun. In the 600cc Production class, Gary Berge came in a clean first, followed by Nick Defago, both Suzuki-mounted. Passing an ambulance on the track is a definite no-no, but it is so hard to hold back after the first rider does it. Five competitors found thef!lselves docked a lap when this happened. Outoftheconfusion, Joe Pitt- . man emerged for third. Formula Three was dominated by a 250cc micro Ninja, ridden by Bruce Behal, until it was pointed out by the other competitors that the upper limit for twin four-strokes was 200cc. Harvey Barton just e4ged out Mark Norris for the revised honors. Behal suffered misfortune again in 600cc Cafe when he went out three· laps from the end. Randy Kingston came in first, edging out Rod Morse and Norm Reed. With 32 competitors in 450cc Production and a track covered with rivers, it is a wonder that 25 of them actually finished. Running with the extreme handicap of starting from the back of the grid, class leader Jim Dewitte fought his way to the front inside of three laps and held on until the finish. Robert Funk and Paul Hopper took second and third respectively. Results 450 PROD: 1. Jim DeWine (Han); 2. Robert Funk (Honl; 3. Paul Hopper (Yam). 600 PROD: 1. Gery Berge (SUlI; 2. MacDonald aced both 250cc Proconte tswhileGrimmreapedtop cash after demolishing both 125cc Pro motos. In the NMA portion of the event, local speedster Ryan Huffman hauled in top brass in two divisions, winning the 60cc A and 80cc B classes on his Yamaha and Kawasaki, sweeping all four motos. Tony Graves easily topped both 125cc B contests. In the first moLO the 125cc Pros gated in front of the combined B conte tants and were led by Grimm on his Kawasaki and Suzukimounted Ernie Roberts. The B riders were unleashed shortly afterwards and were led by Graves and local ace Monty Spalding (Yamaha). Spalding was to be Graves' closest competition in the moLO behind Pros Grimm and Roberts and ahead of Yamaha riders Dennis Rotherham and Dan Mathis. The second contest also had Grimm control the Pro portion while Graves shattered the ego of several Pros on hand by swooping up several of the seasoned veterans for a I-I win in the B ranks over Rotherham, who went 3-2 to beat Spalding across the finish line. The 250cc Pro and 250cc B riders also ran combined in two waves. Yamaha-mounted MacDonald and Seattle-area rider Tracy Bethel motored out of the gate with Honda riders Graves and Ted Perreard close behind on the first of 10 laps. Graves continued his double class rampage, snuffing out the high hopes of Perreard, Mike Hamilton and Olympia, Washington's Kevin Whyte to win the B portion in moto one, which was topped by MacDonald. MacDonald was too much for the competition in the second round and took top cash payoff with I-I rides with Bethel going 2-2 to grab second. Graves did the same damage in the second Bcontest to take a four-moto sweep in his two class quest while Perreard took a 2-2 second over Hamilton's 3-3. Off-road specialist Fritz Martin won the first 250cc moto, which was the largest class in the day's long progr~m. Martin manhandled the moto while Yamaha rider Rick Roberts took second ahead of Suzuki-mounted Chad Egge. Moto two had Egge come away with the win while Roberts denied Martin a sweep of the class. Roberts held off Martin for a 2-2 to take home second place brass behind the 3-1 overall win of Egge and ahead of Martin, who bagged a third, going 1-3. In the NMA portion of the program it was local speedster Huffman nabbing a win in the combined 60cc AlBIC class. Lone A rider Huffman gated dead last, but early in the race had nabbed B rider Shawn Highland for the lead and a moLO win. Highland trailed Huffman, but held on to beat C winner lach Rund and Mikey Ulven (both on Kawasakis) with Ster-
