(Below) Bollmeier topped the 250.. while the 125cc A win fell to Mark Melton (693). 1986 North American MX Championship Melton and Hollmeier shine at Terre Haute By Larry Lawrence TERRE HAUTE, IN, MAY 24-26 Mark Melton and Kenneth Bollmeier were the big winners at the 1986 North American Spring Marathon MX Championships held at the new Pro Caliber track in Terre Haute. Melton and Bollmeier, both 18 years old, won the featured l25cc A and 250cc A classes respectively. 20 Riders from a nine-state area gathered for the AMA-sanctioned, three-day event which, if things go as plamled by the promoter, will become a premier spring event in themjdwesl. The event was hampered by torrential rains that made the course difficult to ride at best, and impossible in some sections. The course was modified to compensate for the condition. Melton, by virtue of his second and first-place finishes in motos one and two, took home the winning purse. In the first l25cc A moto, Bollmeier got the holeshot on his Yamaha com peti tion/Scott/Ha II man/Ka 1Gard-sponsored YZI25 and led into tum one followed bv Robert Mot inger, Melton and Billy Abel. Bollmeier held his lead for the first four laps, constantly pressured by Motsinger and a fast-moving John Grewe. On lap five. Motsinger's Kawasaki motored past Bollmeier. Bollmeier kept falling back and eventually dropped out with mechanical problems. Motsinger, meanwhile, spread out his lead over a tight battle between Melton and Abel. Motsinger took the easy win while Melton held on for second over Abel. "In these 30-minute motos I try to pace myself so I can make a run at the end. I just waited too long to make my move. The condition of the track also make it tough to make up any ground," said Melton after moto number one. In the second moto, Melton was determined not to let his competition get too lar ahead. This time it again was Motsinger and Melton up front, breaking away from the pack. The race went down to the wire but it was Melton with some spectacular moves on hi American Honda/Scoll/HiPoint pectro-sponsored CRI25 crossing the finish line five seconds ahead of Motsinger to win the moto and the 125cc A overalL. Boll meier had two D F in the I25cc A class but.his luck wa much beller in the 250cc A race. Bollmeier, (who is coming off a very successful Florida Winter MX erie), led from wire-to-wire in moto one. The battle for econd in that moto was inten e between Grewe, Melton and Motsinger. Melton nabbed se ond ahead of Grewe and Motsinger. In the second round it was another Melton, Boll meier, Motsinger war. But attribiton took its toll and Motsinger threw a chain and D F. Melton, while running in the lead, ran out of gas midway through the race, leaving Boll meier in the clear to win. Bollmeier feels that this year he'll have a chance to prove himself. "I spent most of last season recovering from a' broken leg," he said. "This year I'm healthy and I'm going out to show what I can really do." The largest clas of the weekend was the 125cc B class. Derrick Roe powered his Kawasaki KX 125 to easy wins in hi two motos. Keith Boyd and Everett Liggett rounded out the top three in that class. Race promoter Chip Derrickson was disappointed with the rider turnout but has high hopes for next year. "We plan on going to an Olympic type format for next year with motocross, upercross and hare scrambles or TT races included. This isonly the second race at this facility, and when it's completed it will be one of the finest in this part of the country." • Results OPEN: 1. Charles Hancodt: 2. Randy Coaper (Hon). 250 A: 1.
