- Farris was aboard Sweet's spare Harley, a ride he obtained after his Ed Fisher Honda came up with cracked cases in practice. Crewing for' Farris were former two-time Grand National Champion Gary Nixon and former Yamaha factory rider Gary Fisher, son of the bike's owner. Bob Donabedian/KK Aftermarket Racing Team-sponsored Scott led until lap eight wben Chandler got by as the field worked· its way through turns one-two. Two laps prior to that, Menens had slipped under Farris in turn one and on the following lap Shobert dropped Farris back another nOlch. Herndon, who had gOlten a miserable stan, got by Farris on the ninth lap, but time had run out and the checkered £lag saw' Freddie Spencer IS u perTra pp-s pon sored Chandler take the win ahead of Scott and Menens. Tommy Mailland gassed his Tex Peel-prepared Harley o££ the line first at the stan of the fourth heat. Former Camel Pro champ Ricky Graham and the rest of the field chased Maitland down the backstraight andacross the line oli the opening lap and for the next nine laps. Graham tried every trick in the book to get by Maitland and after having tried the inside line, Graham did get around Maitland on the outside of turns one-two on the seventh lap. Maitland would have none of that and used the same strategy to take the lead back in turns three and four on the same lap. Graham gave Maitland one more shot on the 10th lap, but the Michigan rider held o££ the California rider for the win. Following Maitland and Graham across the finish line was jones, who had taken over third for good from former Louisville winner Scott Pearson on the fifth lap. Pearson finished fourth, Morehead fifth and polesitter Hardin sixth. Ricky Graham Scores at Springfield Mile with Bel-Ray Semis With only the winner advancing to the National from each of the two semis, a lot of riders were treating them like Last Chance Qualifiers. jay Springsteen wanted no part of the LCQand he romped to the win in the first semi. The five-time Louisville winner led Erichsen and Poovey across the line. Morehead treated the second semi the same way Springsteen had the first; he led from stan to finish after having pulled off a fantastic holeshot - a holeshot so tremendous that many thought he had jumped the stan. Shoben finished second, LCQ bound, after fighting his way to that spot by passing first Pearson and then Hardin. Last Chance Qualifier Poovey pulled the holeshOl at the start of the LCQ, but he and the field were shown the red £lag at the end of lap one, due to Pete Hames having high-sided in turn two. Hames had his bell rung, but shook it o££ and was on the grid for the restart. To the surprise of everyone who had seen how hard he crashed, Hames pulled the holeshot on the restart and led Herndon, Shoben: Farris and the rest of the field across the line at the end of lap one. But Honda factory rider Shobert wasn't about to miss the National and he started a charge that saw him slip inside of Herndon in turn one to take over second and then slip under Hames in turns three and four to take the lead. Announcer Dave Despain credited Shobert's moves to "jerky Power," in reference to the beef jerky that Bubba and his father market. Shobert, Hames and Farris ran close until the eighth lap when Hames and Farris bumped together in turns three-four allowing Shobert to open up a gap and go on to win handily.
