By evening's end, Steve Lucero and Mark Dwyer stood head . and shoulders above the rest after tak'ing wins in the two Division One main events. Dwyer was simply dazzling on the night as he won five of his six rides, including the Handicap main event. In fact, Dwyer came very close to scoring the rare clean sweep on the night. Dwyer (Middle Eanh Video/Maurice's Used Speedway Bikes/Scott Goggles/Arai Weslake) was starting off the 40 in the Handicap main, and he only had Lucero and Mike Faria behind him. Faria and Lucero boasted to the other riders just before the stan of the main, "Look out, we're coming through." That prompted Dwyer to look at Faria and say, "Just catch me if you can, Mike." Those words proved prophetic. Jeff Johnson beat Tuff McBride off the 20 for the lead at the outset. Gary Hicks was initially in third, but Dwyer made quick work of him and then set his sights on McBride. Dwyer got him as they came off turn two on the second revolution. Lucero and Faria were attempting to come through the slower traffic, but lap three proved fateful to them. While Dwyer was re'lieving Johnson of the lead, Faria pulled out with motor ills. At the same time Lucero threw a chain and slowly coasted to the infield. From that point on, it was all Dwyer, and he posted a popular win over Johnson and McBride.. After winning that Handicap main, all Dwyer had to do was win the Scratch main to put the finishing touches on his clean sweep. However, that was not to be, as Dwyer, coming from gate twO, found himself trailing Lucero (Shoei/Scott/Maurice's Used Speedway Bikes/OiJzall/ Gene Woods Racing Products/Leathers Limited/ Cirello Racin~/STP/ Kal-Gard/Hi-Point/QuallA-Tech/ Hair By Bev/Z/IMS/R.C. The crowd favorite then continued his charge'when he also got by Faria on the same lap for second. That is as far as Correy could get, as Lucero was dialed in and went on to beat Coney by three lengths. Dwyer did manage to get past Faria for a third-pla~ finish, Former Rye House Rocket Chris Chaplin played the waiting game and it paid off as the young Englishman won the Second Division rr>ain for the second time of the year. Chaplin (Scott Goggles/ AXO/Dad & Mom/Sandona Racing Weslake) used a smooth move to get Jon Boyer on lap four to take the lead and eventual wm. Archie Perez (Godden), like Chaplin, bided his time and took the lead off the final corner to win the Third Division main over Scott Stevens and Mike Dalbey. Results' SCRATCH: l. Ventura youngster Walt Farmun (WeatherKing/Scott Jawa) led all the way to win the Handicap main event. The race was stopped after Farnum went down and Shawn McConnell was excluded for causing the incident. McConnell and his crew were incensed and they pleaded their case to referee Phil Moon who stuck tohis guns and ruled them out. On the second try, it was all Farnum but he had Rich Sweaney giving him everything he could handle all the way. Sweaney continually tried to poke his front tire into the lead, but Farnum fought him back every time and took the hard-earned win. Third spot, after a big battle, was taken by Ed Castro over Lucero and Gene Woods. Bobby Simons (Don & Lori Faulkner/AXO/IOO% Products/Scott Goggles Weslake) took the lead from Chris Chaplin to post his first-ever south Bay Stadium Division Two win. Chaplin hung on for second with Johnny Walker third. Jim Blan (Jawa) survived an insane Division Three four-Iapper to score his second Ascot win of 1986. Canada's Nelson Coleman finished second., with Dale Capr.io third. Results Ascot Spdwy win to Pfetzing By Scott Daloisio GARDENA, CA, MAY 29 Roben "Five Flavors" Pfetzing got a perfect ga te on the stan of the Scratch main eventat Chris Agajanian's Ascot South Bay Stadium Thursday night, but when the red flag came out on lap one, it looked like it was all for naught. On the restart, Pfetzing agai n gotlhe perfect gate and this time the race ran without problems and PEetzing had his second Ascot win of the 1986 campatgn. Pfetzing was making his incredible starts from gate three, which is notoriously the worst on any speedway track since it rests in the middle of the groove. The red was brought out when Steve Lucero and John "Sidewinder" Sandona went down in turn two. Both made the restart, but nobody was going to beat Pfetzing (Valvoline/STP/Simpson/O'NeaIlUSA/ Scottl1 Grand/KaI-Gard/2 Kin Chu/ NGK/Team Swolen/Z/Trackstar Equipment/Cirell.o Racing Weslake) on the night. Lucero gave chase all the way, but Pfetzing served notice that -he planned to win when he opened it up on the third circuit. ~[~~ba~'p?iruon, he w~~sed lD th~ .• SCRATCH MAIN: I.
