Beta-mounted Ryan Young finished second in both rounds behind Head; in Colorado he lost by eight and in Wyoming the difference was 10. Scott Head won his 13th and 14th in a row with wins in both the Colorado and Wyoming rounds of the AMA/NATC National Championship. AMA/NATC National Championship Observed Trials Series: Round 1 I Head takes Colorado opener By Tim Walker HOWARD, CO, MA Y 24 Scott Head brought his win streak to 13 with his victory in the first round of the AMA/NATA National Series in Colorado today. The Beta-mounted, Cosmopolitan Motorssponsored Head started out slowly the first loop, but posted a low eight on the second loop to take a lead he never relin- 22 quished. Second place went to Ryan Young's Beta with Yamaha-mounted Andy Saum taking third. The Rocky Mountain Trials Association promoted this, the first round of the nine-round series, held in the Sange de Cristo Mountains outside of Howard. A 6.5-mile loop was ridden three times with sections three and II for Championship riders only. The sections were challenging and enjoyable with the exception of a few one liners. Loose rocks, sand and tight turns caused problems for most of the support classes. Section I I was equally challenging to build as Bob Kirkegaard and Cliff and Duane Tucker found out; a 15-foot gap at the entrance was a little bit too much to ask for so the layout crew hand carried I urn ber a mile to the site to build a bridge. At the end of the first loop, Head held a IO-point advantage over Saum, who ended up losing 25 marks to Head's winning 17 marks. Young_ had the lowes't score of 14 to pass Haum for second by four points. McNeal tied with Saum on loop points but his 2.8 points for running late on time pushed him back to fourth. Mark Manniko, the 1985 High School Champion, overcame a bad second loop to finish fifth. Kip Webb (sponsored by Cosmopolitan Motorsl Moore and Sons, C&G/Paul Trucking) edged Don Sweet by two points for sixth place. Comer, Chuck Sutton and Morgan Kaavanaugh rounded out the top J O. In the support classes, David Burke, a National winner in 1979; edged past fellow Coloradian Terry Peacock by four points in the Sportsman Division. A tight ballle emerged for third place between Ken Leduc, Steve Clark, Randy Hamlin and Greg Jones. California's Ledus placed third with 33 while Clark and Hamlin tied at 34. Clark, however, took fourth with two more cleans than Hamlin. Jones took sixth with a 35-point loss. Robin Farmer led the Senior class by 19 over 1985's Senior Champion Charles Mallow. Canadian Bill DeGaris placed third, I I points behind _Mallow. TheSuper Senior wi.n..£eU to _ the '85 champ Jerry Youngon a Fantic 240 while Garry Baughman finished eight points behind for second place. Art Webster was the Veteran class winner over Pate Keen and Curt Comer Sr. The High School class went to Kevin Manniko by a slim two points over Michigan's Todd Co££ey. AMA/NATC Natio~al Championship Observed Trials Series: Round 2 It's Head again in Wyoming By Tim Walker CASPER, WY, MAY 26 Scott Head continued his domination of U.S. trials by winning round two of the AMA/NATC National Series. Head beat teammate Ryan Young by 10 marks while Morgan Kavanaugh fihished third, 20 points behind Head. With the win, Head extended his championship lead over Young to six points. Two loops of 20 sections for Championship riders and 15 sections for Sportsmen classes proved to be very effective in challenging all the entrants. The seven-mile loop offered a 25OO-foot eleva'tion change and a wide variety of terrain. Held at Mosteller Ranch on the outskirts of Casper, the previous National here two years ago was voted by the riders as being too easy, This year, however, was different as the course could be rated among tb best. __ _ _ .. __ ._ Head (sponsored by Cosmopolitan Motors/Sidi/Myper IP J -1 IMichelin) dropped 37 points on the first loop with Kip Webb five points behind, Young lost 44 points, but was one up on Steve McNeal for third, Most of the riders used three to three-and-ahalf hours of the (our hours, 45 minutes allotted for the first loop due to the long- sections and a. few bottlenecks. About 80% of the nders earned penalty points for being late on the second loop (0,2 points for every minute).
