qualified, GSXR Series organizer J im Moore and U.S. Suzuki's Hank Ota decided that Polen would be allowed to keep the $1000 winner's purse. That put Toland up to first place iil points, with Richard Moore second. Don Canet claimed third on his SLOCity Cycles/RV Adventures Suzuki. The Open Production race, with more Suzuki money on the line, was another Polen-versus-Toland affair with the same fini hing order but without any disqualifications. Once a!¥lin Polen went for his pass on the thud lap, but this time entering turn one, and once again Toland did his best to find a way back around his rival. But Polen seemed to be able find a 20-yard gap and hold it, while both of them lapped consistently close to I :31 nat. The order held until the finish with Chris Steward taking a strong third on his Freeway/Dunlop/APA Trucking/Kal-Gardl Bell Helmets/ Cycle Racer-sponsored Suzuki. Toland was calm but frustrated a-£terwards. "He's a very good r·ider but his bikes are real fast. His bikes were very well prepared for Box Stock motorcycles. "Icould reel him in through a few corners but he would get away from me in a straight line," said Toland." Polen denied that his Jon Minonnotuned machines were any faster in a straight line than Toland's: "Basically I think my advantage was in braking into corners and cornering speed, while exit speeds were the same because of tire limitations." While Polen could defeat Toland he couldn't do the same to Honda Interceptor Series King Billy DeBere, who took his Redline VideolTemple City Honda-sponsored entry to a narrow victory over Tu Lin Honda's Richard Moore. Polen finished fourth behind Joe olis in the eight lap race after starting from the back row. He was not put on the front row because of an oversight. In other Stock Production action Long Beach Yamaha/Spectro/Dunlop·sponsored teve Cardillo led a Yamaha FZ600 weep of the top three 600 c places ahead of Chuck Wayco£[ and An Kawaguchi Dean Mizdal won 450cc Stock Production on his RZ350 Yamaha ahead of similarly mounted David Roberts and Daren Fields. Later in the day Mizdal won Modified Production as well, this time leading Fields and Brad Fairbanks (Yamaha RZ350) home. • Results TOVOTWBUDWEISER/COCA·COLA FORMULA USA: 1. Doug Toland (Suz): 2.
