At the end of the five laps it was Renfrow winning by a wide margin, Griffith second, Brauneck closing on third·place GriHith, key fourth, and Heino fifth. Tbe final produced close racing all the way back to 10th place. Oliver led the first lap on his Shoei/Kosman/ SuperTrapp/Tsubaki/Fox/Lockheed/ERC-sponsored RS250 Honda followed by Greene, Renfrow, Stephens, Griffith and Key. By lap two Greene was out front with Renfrow right on his rear tire, Oliver tbird, and Stephens fourth. Key maintained a distant fifth, leading a string of Griffith, John Long, Brauneck, and Curtis. The order remained tbe same through lap five, when it was Renfrow's tum to be in front; third and fourth swapped with Stephens going around Oliver. Renfrow and Greene were now leaving the balance of the field behind as Oliver and Stephens were in turn pulling away from the pack of Key, Griffith, Long, Curtis, and Brauneck. Renfrow led the next three laps, when Greene who was violently out-braking Renfrow in the last turn, went back in front for laps eight and nme. Brauneck began to fall off the pace, and on lap 10 he pitted. A nut had back off the clutch shaft and trans· mission oil leaked on his footpeg, boot, and rear tire, first slowing, then ending his run for the day. Lap 10 was Renfrow's turn to lead; II was Greene's; 12and 13 Renfrow's; 14 saw Greene back in front. The .front two were never separated by more than two or three bikelengths. Stephens continued to maintain third with Oliver fourth, Curtis fifth, Griffith sixth, Key seventh, John France moving up to eighth, Mike McPloyle ninth, and Heino dropping back to 10th. Coming out of the last turn Greene would run wide when powering out, almost going 0(( the track several times. On lap 14 Greene went back in front with Renfrow leading the next lap. The stage was set for the final run to the checker. Greene went back in fron't on the white flag lap with Renfrow trying everytbing in the book to get around Greene for the win. On the final lap it was swing wide exiting the last turn as Renfrow got a better drive; Greene pulled in just as Renfrow's front wheel was coming even with Greene's rear wheel. Renfrow had to pull right to keep from hiuing Greene, and lost his drive and his shot at victory. Stephens was third, Oliver fourth, Curtis fifth, Griffith sixth, Key seventh. "Greene really came by me fast. I tried a couple of places in the infield portion of the track to gel around. .I could come off the comers stronger but it just wasn't enough. I really tried," said Renfrow in victory circle. Third place Stephens said "I got a slow start and that really put me behind. After' that I just couldn't catch up. I was giving away 45 pounds to Randy but everything worked out pretty good. I'd really like to thank all the spectators out here today; they were waving at every turn." AKA FOrDI1da Z Cbaatpionsbip Series: Round ~ Greene takes close Formula Z By Randy Marrs BRAINERD, MN, JUNE I After a runaway win in his qualifing heat, reigning champion Don Greene fought a close battle with MacLean Racing's Randy Renfrow for the entire 17 laps at Brainerd International Raceway, averaging 99.132 mph over 51 miles to beat Renfrow by one bikelength at the finish line. The 14 twO almost collided exiting the last corner on the last lap, but at the finish it was Greene and his HRC/Arai/ Dunlop/Bates/Fox/ERC sponsored RS250 Honda in front. Saturday's final on Brainerd's 10-turn, three-mile road course took just over 25 minutes. "I kept looking for Jimmy jusl after he went down, thinking he was right behind me. I lost my rear brake pedal on the second lap and really had 10 gas il coming out of the turns to get the time back," said Church in victory lane afterwards. Church started on the pole,lost the holeshot to Adamo for the charge 10 turn one, but pulled alongside Adamo as the pair entered the corner lhen took the lead for good. Adamo was able to Slay within five to 10 bikelengths of Church before crashing. , Running third and fourth were Malcolm Tunstall riding a Bimota and Dr. Dave Kieffer on his Sports MC Racing/Rough Stock Racing Ducati. By lap three, Kieffer closed on Tunstall, who began to experience problems shifting. On lap four Tunstall pulled away from K~effer again and lieschang got around Van Staden. BUI on lap six Kieffer got around Tunstall, who continued to experience shifting trouble and fell farther behind. Van Staden moved into fifth. while Chris Helland, riding the Wheels Unlimited Ducati, took the Heavyweight Modified lead fro)II Ziechange. Adamo went out on lap nine, losing the front end as he charged into turn two on Reno Leoni's Ducati 900. Tunstall started revving the motor and slamming the shift lever to change gears and keep Kieffer in sight. By lap 10, Tunstall had adapted to the shifting and began to close on Kieffer. On the next-ta-Iast lap, Tunstall caught KieHer and made his move, moving around the Ducati rider to finishing second to Church. Kieffer took third. Chris Helland was first in Heavyweight Modified and Dean Joas got around John Stapleton for the Lightweight Modified win.
