Ray raids Dirt WorldMX By Toni Anthony JASPER, AL, MAY II Kawasaki-mounted Jerry Ray topped both the 125cc Band 250cc B classes as the Alabama State Championship MX Series reached the halfway point at Din World. In the l25cc B class it looked like a battle was shaping up between Derek Monk and Ray until Monk took a hard fall and Ray went on to win ea ily. Ray led both motos of the 250cc B division from start to finish, and was followed across the line by Chuck parks and Keith Foster. jimmy Sims, aboard his EP Performance-supported Honda, scored easy wins in both l25cc A motos. Jamie Adams recovered from bad start in both motos to finish second in each. Series leader Kevin Hoobler took the overall win in the Sr. Mini class,' but not without pressure from Kevin Pike in the first moto. In the second moto, Hoobler pulled the holeshot and disappeared from the pack. Peanut Ulrich was second overall with Pike third. Results 54 JR: 1. Danny Hayne. (Kaw~ 2. Matthew Neal (Kaw); 3. Stevens clinches FTR Enduro Series ByW.P. Crew LAKELAND, FL, MAY 4 Kevin Steven rode his WR400 Husky to the overall win in the 12th Annual Straight Arrow Enduro, clinching the Florida Trail-Riders Enduro erie with two rounds remaining. The Husky/HiPoint-sponsored rider has won the Florida series six times since his initial first place in·1978. Stevens dropped 13 points enroute, followed by Bob Osborne and Glen Warren jn, with 18 points each, and enior A rider Paul Buxe with 20 points. The Orange County Trail Riders and Central Florida Trail Riders combined their efforts to promote the fun, but challenging 71-mile run through Richloam forest. Severe restriction by the Forestry Service limited comse layout time, and fourwheelers using the area contributed to the problem by selectively removing critical arrows. Finding the course was sometimes the biggestcha!Ienge. The first loop wa approximately 3 miles of jeep trails, din roads and some tight woods which cost a minimum of four point lost, and cost many riders several minutes into their gas stop reset. Crash and burn eemed to be the order of the day as many riders discovered hordes of hidden stumps and roots. The second loop consisted of 38 miles of much tougher terrain. The woods sections were all virgin with a few mud and water hole to add to the challenge. Generally speaking, it was a good "A" rider section, but probably was frustrating for orne of the others. Row 18 AA rider Bob Osborne was the first finisher, and wa ix minutes late. The team challenge trophy went to the Sunrunners, who are currently in second place for the year-end award. Results AA: 1. Shane "Super Shoe" johnson supported the worthy event in spectacular fashion, totally dominating the tough 250cc Intermediate class. Nevada Yamaha/Bandit Racingsponsored johnson blasted to the front of the pack in the first moLO and "wired" the race, winning by a large rna rgi n over Terry Thomas, Alex hill and Verzani Trucking's ScoltBasselt. ] ohnson took the "tourist route" in moLO two, coming into the first big sweeper dead last. ] ohnson wasted no time, however, picking off riders one by one, until the end result was the same as in the first race - johnson and his Yamaha first across the finish line. Ron Goodwin, who had pulled the holeshot, finished second, just ahead of Hill and Thomas. The overall win went, naturally, to johnson with Las Vegas Suzuki's Hill second overall and Thomas third. McAlister rules WoodsideMX ByJim Deane SANDPOINT, ID, MAY 4 Fir t-year Pro Chaun McAlister wasted little time letting the rest of the Pros know who's hot by posting I-I moto scores in both the 125 and 250cc Pro clalsses at the Woodside MX opener. SMS Racing-sponsored McAlister used his Yamaha to holeshot all four motos ap,p ~JIisq;l. put Jr~.\Vjlil&.J;w· e Munson and Leon McDonald battle for second-place money. McDonald ended up with the runner-up cash after Munson gOt off hard, injured his hip and packed it in for the day. Cool weather and muddy conditions didn't deter the 175 riders and more than 200 spectators who turned out for this opener. A lot of the spectators no doubt were here to watch Rick Simmet and Lowell Thomp on go at each other on their home track. Thompson, winner of numerous national Mini titles, and immet, fresh from his win at Kawasaki' Race of Champions, have been close com petitors at Woodside for year ,and today was no ex eption. In the first 250 c A class, Simmet grabbed the hole hot; Lowell was close the whole race, but couldn't quite close the gap and at the end it was all Simmit by about six seconds. The second moto was Thornpson's from stan to finish as he and Simmet tangled in the rough straight after the first turn with Simmet ending up on the ground and tangled up with his bike. By the time immet was under way Thompson wa long gone, but Simmet didn't give up and put in an inspired ride which took him from dead last to third, to finish second for the day. Old Timer action at Woodside has become one of the mo t popular classes. With over 30 riders in the class, it always produces fast, competitive racing. john Matlock got up early to come all the way from Wenatches, Wa hingLOn, to post a perfect 1-1 for top honors. Key unlocks Lodiwin By George Cooper LODI, CA, MAY II Riders arriving for Lodi Motorcycle Club's last TT of the season were greeted by an all new track layout that incorporated both the quarter-mile and eighthmile short tracks. It was a long track, nearly a half mile in length, and it seemed perfectly matched to the riding technique of Mark Key, as he ran wire to wire for the Pro-Am win. Key was challenged the whole way by aggressive Bruce johnson of Salina . johnson's hard-hitting riding style made it appear that he would pass Key eventually, but Key kept closing the door at just the right moment. johnson learned today what many already knew. That is Mark Key, once in the lead, is one o( the most difficult riders in northern California to get around. Close racing was enjoyed in the 500cc junior class, as Roger Hamilton of Anatioch continued his fifth week of detennined riding by finishing first Qv.er Kenny Burton of Stock-
