Pinney fops Budds Creek MX BUDDS CREEK, MD, APR. 20 A typical spring day in southern Maryland set the stage for a Virginia Expert Championship Poims race, and the 125cc Expert class started the day with one of the most exciting motos. Mike Callihan from Warrenton, Virginia jumped in the lead followed by a bevy of£astlocal rider. Todd Stith, aboard a very fast Yamaha, followed the pace set by Callihan with Rick Pinney from Lansing, ew York in hot pursuit. After a few laps of tough racing among these three riders for the lead, Stith was able to slip by. Callihan had his hands full keeping Pinney al bay for the rest of the mota as they both watched Stith open a commanding lead. Ted Orr, Steve Simpson and Donny Melchior bauled the rest of the moto and finished fourth, fifth and sixth. The second l25cc moto saw Stith grab the holeshot and never look back. A great ride was put in by, Melchion, who worked his way up to second place by the checkered flag. Pinney and Orr jockeyed for the third position with Pinney grabbing it at the finish. Simpson and Larry Menzel went ateach other for the fifth and sixth spot with Menzel seuling into sixth to pace the District 13 riders. When the gate fen to release the 250cc Experts, the spectators were treated to the most exc·iting race of the day. Randy Evereu was going to be the man to beat but Pinney, local Pro Bobby Deluvik and Virginia's number one, Claude Mitchell, needed to see for themselves. Evereu was running on the pace set by Pinney, Deluvik and Mitchell. After disposing of Virginia's Champion, Evereu hooked up in a freight train behind Pinney and Deluvik.This race wa wheel=to-wheel for the next few laps as they bauled for the lead. Then, in one lap, Everett blasted into the lead and never looked back. Pinney held off Deluvik [or second. Mitchell had his hands full with Mike Harris from Stumpy Point, North Carolina. Gary Bieriien was the next rider followed by Joe Prosey in seventh. The second 250cc Expert mota saw Evereu grab the holes hot with Deluvik, Pinney and Mitchell in hot pursuit. The blistering pace Evereu set in the first moto came ba k to haunt him as Pinney moved around Deluvik and went for the lead. Pinney oon took the lead from Everett and Deluvik also gal by. Deluvik and Chip Anacker put on quite a show [or the fans but James Jarman, a very fast Virginian, found himself battling the two Pros all afternoon. The first round went to Anacker with Jarman and Deluvik behind. Russell and Pete Shinault went at each other for fourth with Russell taking it [rom Virginian' Pete hinault and Greg Pieper. The second moto aw the Pros out in from, where, after a long, hard mota, Deluvik was able to beat Anacker to the checkered flag. Jarman had to seule into third [or this round. Ricky Price, a fellow District 13 rider, [ollowed Jarman across the line for fourth. Reynard has won the last three rounds and leads the championship series. Kevin Mussman led the Open class riders to the checkered flag, while Wayne Struckhoff and Pat Smith did the same in the 250 and 200cc classes.
