half to go. The top four riders set a
fast paced final lap, a full eight
seconds ahead of fifth placed Kevin
Gibbs. At this point, it could have
been anyone of the top four riders
winning the moto as each rider rode
the turns and jumps tire to tire and
side by side. Hand grabbed. econd
place from Deutsch with only a half a
lap to go, Andrews leading the way
through the checkered £lag, followed
by Hand, Deutsch and Robison.
As the gate dropped for the second
moto, Mike Johnston, riding a Wetzel four-stroke Husky, reached the
first turn just ahead of Alan Pizzino.
As the duo rounded the turn, Pizzino
cut tathe inside, sending Johnston to
the outside and Pizzino £lying oH his
bike, with the bike standing on end.
Hand and Andrews added to the pile
up when Andrews, charging from
behind, slammed into Hand with
both riders landing on the ground.
Before the dust could settle, John
Ruper seized the moment, maneuvering through the downed riders and
grabbing the lead with Deutsch and
Robison the next two riders to emerge
from the congested first turn. While
Hand and Andrews, both unharmed
in the pile up, were quickly back on
their bikes joining the race mid pack,
Deutsch had taken the lead away
from Ruper after three-quarters of a
lap. The three riders: Deutsch, Ruper
and Robison were riding a fast paced
race when Deutsch began to pull
away (rom the two riders close behind.
On the second lap, just over the sky
jump, Robison pulled up behind
Ruper, urging him to move aside.
Ruper, who realized that he wouldn't
be able to keep pace with Deutsch but
knew that his Brunswick Suzuki
teammate Robison could, puJled aside
to let Robison chase Deutsch [or the
top spot. Ruper held onto third place
for three laps, holding oH the charges
of Husky-mounted Craig Martin and
Honda-mounted Carl Hand, allowing Deutsch and Robison to take a
17-second lead ahead of the pack.
Andrews and David Hand, meanwhile
had worked their way into sixth and
seventh places. With two and a half
laps remaining, the riders in third
through seventh places each exchanged places with one of the riders
close behind. Carl Hand moved into
third followed by Andrews, Martin,
David Hand and Ruper. With onehalf lap to the finish, Andrew slipped
past Carl Hand leaving him and his
brother David battling for fourth.
The race between Deutsch' and Robison heated up during the final lap of
the moto as Robison edged closer to
Deutsch through each tum and over
every jump. With the checkered nag
just around the corner, the two riders
were side by side, and it looked like it
was going to be a photo finish. As
they rounded the final tum, a lapped
rider stood between the two riders
and the first-place victory. Deutsch
had taken the inside line with Robison taking the outside. In a splitsecond move, the lapped rider went
to the outside. cutting Robison oH,
leaving Deutsch to finish solo. Robison a very close second. Andrews was
in third through the finish with David
Hand passing his brother Carl a few
turns before the finish to take fourth.
Martin followed Carl Hand in sixth
and the early leader Ruper finished
seventh.
