(.0 00 0') Faria wins Ascot Carlo Coen topped both the 125 and 250cc Expert classes at Broome Tioga Sports Center on May 4. Speedway By Scott Daloisio GARDENA, CA, MAY 8 In me early part of the 1986 speedway season in southern California me action in First Division has been dominated Ronnie Correy won the Handicap main at Ascot South Bay Stadium; Mike Faria chases in the background. 54 credited with third in the small field. The U.S. Suzuki representatives were pleased as Suzukis took all the top spotS in both classes. • The Honda 500 Interceptor Series northeast debut was convincingly won by Canadian John Ramsey, who took the lead on the first lap and stretched it steadily throughout the race. The best racing was for second place, as Rich Burdick, Lars Berggren, Joel Ziemnicki, Silas Hiscock, and Paul Ouleue battled fiercely throughout the event. Berggren and Ziemnicki, both Junior class riders, came [rom the second wave to take third and fourth, nearly catching Burdick for second spot. Hiscock, the acknowledged rain-meister at Loudon, could not hold on to second place past the first four laps, and faded to fifth by the finish. Other AAMRR action saw a hOlly contested Formula Two Expert final. Brian O'Shea, on a highly modified Kawasaki Ninja 600 endurance racer, held off a determined charge from Yamaha TZ250 rider Larry Hanlon. Ross Myra, also on a TZ250, was also in contention for lhe win before seizing going into turn 10 on lap eight. A light shower during the race added to the exci tement for those riders on slicks. Bill Blythe finished fourth on a week-old, stock Yamaha FZ600. Paul Ouleue was third. . Hanlon stuck close to O'Shea in the late laps, leading briefly several times, bU~~gJ.ing up shoj"t after a la tlap, last turn charge put him full lock sideways in turn 10. O'Shea said afterwards that hedidn 't dare breathe for the last half lapThe Ninja he rode currently leads the AMA/CCS GTU Endurance Championship and O'Shea was worried about the risk of being taken out by another bike. In all, some 300 riders and 700 entries made for close action on the twisting 1.6-mile Loudon circuit. Next AAMRR race is at Pocono International Raceway. Results F- 1 EX: 1. David Strobel (SUl): 2. That track was Chris Agajanian's Ascot South Bay Stadium but Faria changed all that Thursday night when he beat Sam Ermolenko in an incredible phOIO finish in the Scratch main event. The previous evening they met in a much-ballyhooed showdown at IMS and Ermolenko was clear-cut winner. But Faria reversed the situation at Ascot. The twO riders met a IOtal of four times on the night and Faria came out on lOp all four times. Both Faria and Ermolenko were beaten out of the gate at the start of the main by Steve Lucero, but when Lucero went wide as they came 0[[ turn twO Faria and Ermolenko raced by on the inside. The two riders fought for the lead as they shot down the back chute and Faria was the first to turn three. Ermolenko ducked in right behind the slender leader from Col ton, California and he tried everything he knew in an e[[orL to get by, Faria was carefully guarding the pole and it seemed like it was his as they came off turn two for the final time but Ermolenko managed to jam it inside him as they headed for turn three. They blasted into turn three at an astounding speed and Faria maintained a narrow margin. As they came of[ four and headed for the checkered Ermolenko slowly inched alongside Faria; both got as far back on their seats as possible to increase traction. They crossed the line with the ends of their handlebars virtually parallel. The crowd gave both a standing ovation with the win going to Faria. Brad Oxley was third over Lu ero. Rising young star Ronnie "The Kid" Correy got on the program as a reserve and then proceeded 10 win the Handicap main event from the 20yard line. Andy Northrup was second on the start but he was quickly relegated 10 third by Oxley. Oxley was slowly but surely making up ground on Correy but not fast enough to take the lead by the end of five laps. Faria, Ermolenko and John Sandona were having a wild ballle for the fourth pOl. Oxley closed the gap all the way up and finished a close second with Faria, Northrup and Ermolenko crossing the line three abreast in the b<\If.~r third with Faria_takin~it by an eyelash. Kurt Markham got the nod of approval from Team Blaze Racing who, after watching his win in the Second Division main, made him part of the ever-popular team. Markham turned in a solid performance aboard a two-valve Jawa for the win over Bobby Simons, Mark Brooks and Scotty Brown. Ken Berry won an exciting Third Division main over Tony Frank and Duane "Pinky" Blake. They were the only three riders to make it the third time the race was started. ( Results SCRATCH; 1.
