they disregarded the markers. World Championship points leader Jacky Vimond o( France had gated (ourth, but crashed on lap three. He rejoined the action in 14th place, crashed again almost immedIately, and retired (rom the race. Michele Rinaldi (Suzuki), who was expected to run with the leaders, also crashed on lap three and dropped to 13th position. He eventually battled back to (inish seventh. The 30,OOO-strong, partisan crowd was appreciative o( Whatley's per(ormance. It was the (irst time the Italians had seen the 250cc Cagiva which is manufactured only 20 minutes from the race site - compete in a World Championship GP. The second moto started in almost unbearable heat, which persisted well into the late afternoon. Fanton was the first out of the gate, followed by compatriot Franco Rossi (Honda), and Austria's Karl Sulzer (KTM). Whatley was back in fifth, and at the end of the opening lap Banks ~as running 17th. Despite a (ew straw bales blocking part of his off-course line on the bumpy uphill section, Fanton continued to use his outside line to make up time. Despite protests to jury members and the clerk o( the course (rom the British, Cagiva and Honda camps, Fanton continued to use the line without penalty. Whatley climbed the leader board one position each lap, and by lap (our he was running in second and closing on Fanton. Four laps later he was' right with the Italian, but disaster struck on lap nine when his (uel line came off and the Cagiva sputtered to a halt 100 yards (rom the (inish line. Although Whatley rejoined the action in 20th position, he stopped again within a hal( a lap, with dirt clogging his (uel line. Banks was having a hard time. He was running consistently between 15th and 18th place, battling with some hard-riding Russians, and trying to cope with a bent gearshi£L lever, which was damaged during an early-race collision. He (inished 15th to earn a single World Championship point. Up (ront, Vimond and Rinaldi were trying to make amends (or their (irst-race crash by charging hard, while moto leader Fanton was fading (ast. Rinaldi took the lead with (our laps remaining, and Frenchman Vimond (ollowed him through into second place. Honda-mounted Gert-Jan Van Doorn pushed hard to close on Fanton, but crashed during a Cinal-lap e((ort to get around the Italian. He remounted quickly to claim fourth, finishing three seconds behind Fanton. Even though two broken collarbones delayed his season start, Whatley will become a major GP threat if he can maintain or improve on the form he displayed at the Italian GP.
