Nine races will be run in mid-America during the month of June and the season will be half over before the end of next month. As we did in an earlier column, let's take the races one by one, in the order that they will be run, to possibly arrive at just who will do what. Springfield (Illinois) Mile: If past performances mean anything, then former Grand National Champion Ricky Graham will end up the winner. He has won a record five times here, and that's five wins in seven outingsl Graham holds all the track records. But defending champ Bubba Shobert is hot now, having won once and finished second once in the two mile races run this year. Bubba and Ricky. each won one of the twO 25-lap races at Springfield last year. The event dates back to 1937 with the Indian brand winning five times running, but then shut out until back-to-back wins in 1952-53 during the last hurrah days of the Indian WreckinR Crew which consisted of Bobby Hill and Bill Tuman. Racing was held on an annual basis until] 967 when it was brought to a halt when the bad guys forced the good guys out of the facility due to the downtown antics of the former after the '66 race. Racing returned to the Illinois State Fairgrounds in 1982, thanks to an aggressive state motorcycle dealer association. And, as we said, Graham has won all but two of the races since the revival. Louisville (Kentucky) Half Mi]e: An annual event since 1967 when Bart Markel won and then backed up that performance by also winning the next two years. The race at Louisville Downs takes place on a wide, crushed granite oval that provides for spectacular sliding during practice sessions, but in recent years has turned into a narrow groove for racing with few exceptions. It was here in 1982 that Scott Pearson gave Honda their first and only , National victory on this track. The last six races have produced six different winners, and all six will be back this year. Terry Poovey is the defending champ; Steve Eklund and Pearson are the track record holders. Brainerd (Minnesota) Road Race: The fourth annual affair in the Land of 10,000 lakes and 5000 fish. Fred Merkel has won the last two Superbike finals while Canadian Alan LaBrosse is the defending Formula One winner. Former Superbike champ Wayne Rainey returns for the first time since he won the Superbike final in '83. A rider's track in a great resort-type setting. Two-time F-I winner Mike Baldwin is off to Europe chasing Freddie Spencer and Eddie Lawson CURT HALL GIenrose Hmda ~Pts/$'mO so Rainey could well score a "double" in this one if Merkel falters one time. Elkhart Lake (Wisconsin) Road Race: Just about straight east a few hours from Brainerd is the Road America facility. This will be the seventh annual go-around on a track so long that in some places there are no spectators. Rainey won his first-ever F-] fioal here last season and he is the only past champ to be entered this year. Merkel is a two-time Superbike winner here and the only former winner in that class who's back for another try in '86. Again, it appears to be shaping up as a dry, but Rainey weekend with Merkel adding the flavor. Loudon (New Hampshire) Road Race: Road races on three straight weekends as the pavement artists leave Wisconsin and head for Bryar Motorsport Park in New England. If all the riders and bikes survive the two previous events, it will be another good one on the most demanding road race course on the schedule. This track was first run in 1965; the previous site for Nationals is still a road through a park. If ever a rider should return home it is Baldwin, the winner here the last four times in a row I Without him it means that DO former F-] winners are entered. It was here last season that Rainey crashed hard in practice and was out of the running for the F -I title the rest of the season. This is also the same track on which he won his first Pro road race in his first attempt. Talent required for this one. A rider can leave his Daytona horsepower home and go with reliability. c.o 00 O'l .... (Continued next week) MIKE JOHNSON ~~ SCOTT MOON Setf~ 'J6.1UIIts 1$400 , . 17
