line to lead the Junior National over Cannon, Barnell and McDowell. Near the end of the 12-)ap event, Cannon accidently hit his killswitch: shutting off the engine. Villella drove on to the win, followed by McDowell and Barnell. Scott Pearson. Bubba Shobert (1 ) and Scott Parker (11 ) had the best race of the night in heat three; Parker won the heat. then finished third in the main in front of the 6289 spectators. (Below) Junior National winner Bryan ViUella. (Belowl Steve Morehead and Rod Farris (92) race for second in their heat race. Morehead was 10th in the main. Farris 13th. after crashing. 8 The top three were spread out as they took the checkered flag; Tim Mertens was in fourth, with Mike Arthur fifth. Semis Only one rider from each 12-man semi would make the transfer to the ational. ]n semi one, Don Howard led most of the way, but was passed on the ninth of 10 laps by Estep, who survived a fierce battle for second with Roger Thompson, Peter Hook and Eric Rausch. Estep (Gardner Racing/ Steel Masters/Custom Cycle Supply/ Arai/Castrol) passed the checkered flag first, trailed by Howard and Thompson. Graham and Cornwell raced for the lead in the second semi, but they both lost out. Graham was the initial leader, but Cornwell held the advantage on lap two. Graham retook the position as they came off four, also making room for Mertens to pass. Cornwell got under Mertens on the backstraight halfway through lap four, and spent the next couple laps chasing Graham. On lap eight, Cornwell stole the lead in turn one. The leaders wereside-by-side in turn three, with Graham on the inside. They made contact, and Cornwell fell in turn four, but was quickly up and on his way. Graham went on to win over Mertens (Belleville HondaiShoeil M&M Racing/Maxie), but was later disqualified for knocking down Cornwell, who was initially quite hot about the incident. With Graham out, Mertens earned a berth in the main. Carr pulled off early in the race with a bike that wouldn't shift, and was out for the evening. Last Chance Qualifier ]n the first 12-rider, six-lap Junior National heat race, top qualifier Bryan Villella (MC Racing/Wood Racing/ D.I.D.lChivington Honda/Lucas Farms/Hogwash Carb Cleaners) led wire to wire, taking the win over three-time Junior National winner Bryan McDowell and Scott Scherb. There was a good race for the heattwo win, and Champion Racing Frames-sponsored Curtis Cannon earned the win with a last-lap pass on Bruce Johnson; Mearl Barnell rode his two-stroke Honda into third. Villella jammed orr the starting National The 20-lap National was delayed for a short while when Estep fell off in turn two on the warm-up lap after hitting a hole; Estep was uninjured. but his bike couldn't be repaired in time. At the start of the National, Jones jumped out into the lead, followed by' Goss, Parker, Springsteen, Chandler, Farris and Shobert. After a couple of laps, the lead trio pulled away slightly, while Shobert moved past Farris and Chandler into fifth, to work on Springer. Up front, Jones had a comfortableeight-hikelength lead on laps five through 10, and was apparently on his way to a second-consecutive Ascot Half Mile win, while Parker tried Goss for second. Past the halfway point, Parker found the good lines and gOt by Coss, who followed and studied for a couple of laps. Behind them, Springer was holding off advances from Shobert and Chandler; Farris ran seventh, while Pearson was apparently having brake problems, which slowed him some. Once Goss was onLO Parker's lines, he used them LO pass his former teammate_ Goss' and Parker's race for second place carried them right up LO the rear wheel of Jones' Honda. On lap 17, Goss (Harley Dealers/Portco Sprockets/Bell/SuperTrapp/HiPoint/Works Performance/Wiseco/ Diamond! D/Marzocchi) slid past Jones for the lead, and didn't have any problems staying there until the finish; Parker ended up in third. Chandler and Shobert were trading fifth place back and forth for much of the race, but Chandler held the upper hand in the closing laps, then put on a charge that carried him past Springer and into fourth, relegating the Harley rider LO fifth place for the second week in a row. Shobert finish sixth, but retained his Camel Pro Series points lead. Farris fell in turn one on the last lap, and was credited with 13th place. "We were all having a little problem getting around the ruts in the turn," Goss said, "but when Scolly passed me, he showed me the fast way through them. ] just used his lines. ] really want to thank the Harley Dealers and Portco Sprockets, my two major sponsors. Without them, ] wouldn't be out here." Jones (Gill/GF Racing/Shoeil Knight/Megacycle) was happy with second place, and said, "After leading the race for so long, I was commilled to my lines. Once Randy got by,] couldn't make my lines work to pass him back." • Results 25-LAP NATIONAL: 1. R.ndy Goss (H-D); 2. Ronnie Jone. (Hon); 3. Scott P.rtter (H-D); 4. Doug Ch.ndler (Hon); 5.
