Biily Harrison (2141 and Randal Broadway (81 start the second 250cc/Open moto at Three Springs MX; Kennedy won. the lead LO Fox. Fox, on his Kawasaki USA/Barr/FMF/SAS/Scott/ Hi-Point Kawasaki showed his speed as he £lew to the mota win. Scott Watkins ran second for two laps but fell prey to Watson's charge and finished third. Watson led at the start of the first 2S0cc Pro class maLO, followed by Robbie Neeley and Gerald Wood. Wood quickly moved to. second followed by Robbie Taylor. They held their positions for several laps until Watson uredand started fading. Wood diced with Watson then moved ahead for the lead. Mike Crane was on the move and worked his way to second. They finished in that order - Wood, Crane, Taylor - while Watson had faded LO fourth. Neeley holeshot the second mota, followed by Watson and Glen Addair. Watson moved ahead on lap one and Sam Buchalter moved by Addair for third. ' By lap four, Watson had a comfortable lead and Robbie Taylor had charged LO second. Gerald Wood had been left laying on the ground in the first turn during a crash at the start, but he was riding like a man possessed. Watson won, Taylor was second, and Wood finished a commendable third. Ron Jones, Neeley and Watson freight trained at the start of the first mota of the Open Pro class, but Jones had clutch prohlems and dropped t~. third trying LO get it adjusted, while Watson £lew to the lead before the first lap was over, pulled ahead and motored LO the win. Tommy Martin was the man on the move as he started 10th and worked his way to second at the flag. Neeley finished third ahead of Rick Lindell. The second moto saw Jones, Tim Shepherd and Martin first out of the gate. Martin was sill charging and took the lead on lap two. He mamtained a quick pace to the end to win, followed by Shepherd, Lindell and Jones. Kenny Kizzar was the top amateur rider of the day as he won the 12Scc B and 2S0cc B classes. Mercill masters MidwayMX By Rolfe Otterness KELLOGG, MN, APR. 27 Jay Mercill motored to the overall win in the 125cc Expert class as Midway Recreation Park held its first MX of the year. Scott Truempi shot into the lead at the start of the first moto with Mercill and Rick pfeilsticker in close pursuit. As Truempi pulled away, pfeilsticker closed in on Mercill and made his move in the infamous 'Dirty Dozen' whoops. Mercill retaliated one lap later as he zapped pfeilsticker down the back srraight to take second for good. Leon Larock held on to fourth. Truempi had troubles early in the second maLO and dropped to the back of the pack. Richard Burns led for much of the way, but on the last lap Mercill took command. Pfeilsticker, Scott Ruegg, and Larock rounded out the top four. This was the first District 23 race held at Midway this year and 16S riders entered despite the muddy conditions apparent during practice. Rain left a soupy surface for the first few matos, but the track dried out later in the day. Chris Hughes pulled the holeshot in the first 2SOcc Expert class moto but long-time competitor Mike Craif passed him in a wild charge through the 'Dirty Dozen.' Graif held on to the lead for the rest of the race despite an early challenge from Mickey. Mickelson. Kawasaki-mounted Hughes took third behind the two Honda-mounted leaders. Sean Valentine cruised in fourth. Hughes made it to the first turn first in the second moto, but hit a slick spot, getting sideways in from of GraiL Graif lost it and both riders were left trailing the pack. Hughes' bike restarted quickly and he took off to surprise the leader Mickelson On .the last lap and take the win. Graif had some trouble restarting his CR, but still managed to claim third behind Mickelson in the short, three-lap race. Aaron Kolb switched MINI JR: 1. Alan Dekeyrel; 2. Casey Staige; 3. Arnold, Everhart top Three Springs By Henry Muller LEXINGTON, NC, APR. 27 Peter Arnold jammed to the 80cc MX class win at Three Springs MX with Lee's Kawasaki-sponsored James Kennedy earning the victory in the SOOcc class. The event was sponsored by Chuck's Cycle sales in Welcome, North Carolina. Phillip Bruggerman held the edge in the first 80cc MX maLO and took the win over Arnold. Wayne Simerson managed LO hold off Alton Hanes at the flag for third with Chris Spencer finishing out the LOp five. MaLO two was another story as Arnold took the early lead over Bruggerman and Hanes. For the remainder of the maLO the top three pulled away from the field. Arnold crossed the finish line inches ahead of Bruggerman and Hanes. Arnold's 2-1 beat Bruggerman's 1-2 for the overall win with Hane third over Justin Beck. Chuck's M/C-sponsored Danny Norman powered his Suzuki into the lead in the first l2Scc class mota with Lee Everharrhot on his tailpipe. The two leaders waged a battle that lasted until the halfway point. when Everhart surged ahead for the win. Norman held second with lady Jacobs overcoming midpack traffic for third. MaLO two looked like a repeat as Ev~rhart and Norman took the front positions with Jacobs and Lee Wyatt dicing for third. Everhart stretched his lead to the flag with Norman second ahead of Jacobs ahd Wyatt. The 2S0cc and Open classes were run together but scored seperately with Enduro class winner Gray Leonard on the line under exhibitien status. James Kennedy nailed the start with Leonard jumping into second on the front straigh t. Leonard kept his screaming Can-Am on Kennedy's rear fender but Kennedy held tough for the win over unscored Leonard with 2S0cc class wInner Randall Broadway next. .Billy Harrison was second Open bike over Dee McDaniel. Kennedy cleaned house with a win in maLO two over Harrison and McDaniel with Broadway clinching the 2S0cc win. North Carolina hare scrambles series point leader Gray Leonard took some time off from his busy schedule and romped in the Enduro class with Dee McDaniel riding his IT490 to second. By Mary Hanson STURGIS, S.D., APR. 20 Despite cold, wet and muddy weather conditions, the Borderline Racing Association (BRA) kicked off its first race of the season at Sturgis Raceway today, and one of the big winners was Billy SLOrk, who won the 12Scc A class. Ward Wassenburger blasted into the lead at the start of the first moto but couldn't hang on to the lead for very long. Lee Vern Berry slithered by Wassenburger, as did Stork. Berry set the pace for the rest of the mota, while Stork pursued. The pressure SLOrk was handing out was too much for the leader, Berry. Stork took over the top spot, bu t Berry wasn't through yeti Berry made his move on Stork through a section of whoops but .almost lost it, losing his drive. But Stork also became out of shape in the whoops, so Berry saw his chance and made his move, darting into the.Iead, once again. Berry went on to. win, followed by Stork. Round two saw Stork blitz into the lead, followed by Wassenburger, Clint Overman and Berry. Dave Molder and Berry quickly took over second and third, while.Stork pulled away. Berry eventually powered by Molder for second but had no chance at catching the leader, Stork. Stork took the overall, via a 2-1 tally, followed by Berry and Molder. Results MINI A: 1. Carriger wins Bolado IIat track By Mike Vancil HOLLISTER, CA, APR. 26 Tom Carriger had an upidown evening at the Hi-Point Series, Balado Park flat track event promoted by R&D Enterprises, sanctioned by AMA and cq-sponsored by Stroh's Beer and Pepsi Cola. The SOOcc Expert final saw Carriger in the lead at the outset, but two laps into the event, he unloaded, throwing his Suzuki four stroke down hard enough that he was unable to re-enter the event. Robert Miller inherited the lead on a converted Honda motocross machine and he took the win, while under considerable pressure from seasoned Hal. tracker Brad Spencer from Hollister on his potent Yamaha TT. The spill experienced by Carriger only injured his pride and perhaps was reason for him to try harder in the prestigeous Pro-Am Expert final. Nine riders lined up for the Pro-Am Expert final and it was Mike Inderbitzin of Modesto on his Can-Am who was first to grid.
