me and deliberately plowed into me," said Holland later. Nevertheless, Lechien forced his way into the lead, while Holland stayed close. About the same time, Holley displaced Leisk for third, making the finishing order Lechien, Holland, Holl~y and Leisk. Yamaha's Danny Storbeck shot into the lead at the start of the third' heat race, ahead of Billy Frank, Keith Bowen, Ward and Kawasaki rider Billy Liles. During the first lap, Bowen dove to the inside of Storbeck- and took over the "lead, which didn't last for long. Ward, who had taken over third, displaced Storbeck and set after Bowen. The two riders collided at one point when Ward slipped by for the lead. After that, the race was all Ward's. Bowen finished second, while Storbeck and Liles finished third and fourth. Yamaha's Scott Burnworth stole the holeshot in the final heat race, inches ahead of Johnson, Doug Du bach, Bailey and O'Mara. By lap two, both Bailey and O'Mara had snuck by Dubach with Burnworth stm leading. It wasn'~untilthe fourth lap when Johnson made his move and zapped Burnworth through a turn. Burnworth stayed tough and didn't give an inch to Bailey, who ended up having to settle for third. O'Mara finished fourth. ,~rBEST A BARGAIN ·TOOI HONDA ve .• Tustin. Warren settled into the lead with Brooks and Frank close behind. As the race progressed, Brooks pulled slightly away from Frank while staying glued to Warren's rear fender. Brooks made a strong attempt to pass Warren on the final lap but came up a few turns too short. The second semi was a reaJ thriller and had- the crowd on its feet the whole race. It began when Dubach shot into the lead and developed a quick, good-size lead. But the real battle was over second between Suzuki's A.]. Whiting and Honda r~der Guy Cooper. Cooper held second early in the race, while Whiting pursued. During the second lap, Whiting stuffed Cooper in a turn and took over second, but Cooper sailed by Whiting a double-jump later. Shortly after, Cooper and Whiting tangled in a turn with both riders going down. Yamaha rider Scott Manning then motored by the downed riders and into second place; while Cooper remounted right behind him. Whiting picked back up in fifth. Now the fight was between Manning arid Cooper. The two riders fought tooth-and-nail until Cooper got caught in a mean tank-slapper and crashed out of contention. Meanwhile, Whiting had worked back into third and started pressuring Manning. With the white £Jag in sight, the two were inches apart. Dubach easily took the win, while Manning finished second, a wheellength ahead of Whiting. P.tronlze the.. fun ..rvlce Mond.·ret nd ..nice f.cllltle..
