At the checkered flag the Paul Smith Racing Yamaha barely edged New Haven Kawasaki for second as Donnie Rowe and Tommy Cloan brought the Jam-Ups Yamaha home third in GTU. Round' One of the new AMA/CCS Pro-Am Series [or Heavyweight Superbike and Formula Two Experts and Supertwins combined took place on Sunday. "This will be a five-event, series paying double prize money and counting towards a National championship in each class" said AMA Championship Cup Series Director Roger Edmondson. Carl Muffley, Ed Key and Chris Helland were the inaugural Expert winners as Tom Wegman took the first-time Novice honors for the new series. Leading off the Heavyweight Superbike battle [or Experts was Key on his Northshore Racing FZ750 Yamaha, followed by Roy Hare on the Hare Racing GSXR750 Suzuki, Carl Muffley on a GSXR750, igel Gale on a FZ750, and Gary Gibson, also on a FZ. By lap two of the six-lap finals, Muffley moved around Hare and started after Key. These front five ran very close until lap five. when Gibson moved in front and began to pull away with Muffley in hot pursuit. Muffley got around Gibson on the last lap, taking the win with Gale third, Key fourth, and Hare fifth. The Expert race for Formula Two saw Gary Gibson lead Ed Key, both on RS250 Hondas, for the first three laps; on lap four it was Key out in front. Starting from way back in the pack was Kevin Rentzell, making a charge to the front and taking over third on the third lap. Key and Gibson were close until the last lap when Gibson overcooked turn three and fell orr; he got back in the race to finish second behind Key with Rentzell third. The Supertwins race (or Experts had Chris Helland on a 900 Ducati beating Kim Casper on his new 750 F-l Ducati and Bill Shea on an 850 Moto-Guzzi.
