Can-Am', Johnny Martin i, having a ,low start 10 far this ....on. In New Jersey, Martin finished out of the top 10 overall, KTM', Kevin Hine, (above, 23E) won hi, first National of the year, while Terry· Cunningham (below) .uffered mechanical problem,. and the sand whoops and pine trees are just like what I ride back home in Massachusetts. " Millville/Husky rider Jack Lafferty Jr. also proved he could ride the sand by posting a score of 16, good enough for .second overall. Lafferty said he likes the whoops; he had a £lawless ride aboard his 250 Husqvarna. Donnie Tomlin, riding a Millville/Yamaha YZ250, took third overall despite losing his speedometer late in the race. "I lost my speedo around 70 miles, but it didn't matter near the end, I could still keep time," he said. Tomlin also added that he enjoyed the day and the race because "it was a good hard run." The course was composed of three loops - the first 34 miles long, the second 28 miles and the third, 38 tor a total of 100 miles minus II miles in resets. The trail consisted primarily of tight trails with sand and woods roads. The majority of tight trails placed in the first loop; the second loop was mainly sand roads and tight trails; while the third loop had many sand roads linked together by pieces of tight trail. Many riders not used to riding in the sand complained of the long whoop-de-doo sections, some of which stretched for miles. Fifth place AA rider Drew Smith, who stiffened the forks on his 500cc Keystone- backed Honda a few days before the race, explained that they were too hard for the whoops and he had to soften them up after the first loop. "After I took the pre-load out, I started riding good and overall it was an excellent run." AMA National Championship Enduro 5erIes:'.Round 3 Hines whoops Pine Barons Enduro By Dennis Zurawski Jr. CHATSWORTH, N.J., MAY 4 Kevin Hines used a Type-3 KTM 350, to take the overall win a.t the AMA Pine Barons National Enduro, followed closdy by Jack Lafferty Jr. and Donnie Tomlin. Hines, who dropped only 13 points for the da said he "was mentall re- I pared and ready to win a National. I was ready for the run, Can-Am rider john Martin had a tough time with the sand and said "The course had too many whQOps and not enough tough stufL" Fred Hoess thought the same as he and his KTM also had trouble handling the sand trials. Team Husky rider Terry Cunningham also had some problems during the day which forced him to lose 25 points, dropping him to 17th overalL. Cunningham had trouble in the morning when his bike's automatic transmission started giving him problems. "There are three springs which work by centrifugal force," Cunningham said. "One of the springs broke and I had to put a new unit in at the first gas stop." Cunningham fixed the transmissions quickly, only to encounter another problem out on the trail. "When you put a new unit in, it has a little drag to ·it. When I came into the check (the first one of the second loop) I was trying to put the bike into neutral so I could stop," he said. This caused Cunningham to miss the £lag which signified an observa tion check, and he left expecting three "[ree" miles. Instead, a secret check was placed shortly after, and Cunningham arrived two minutes hot, [or a seven-point penalty. This particular check placement caught many riders coming in early. Drew Smith was cautious though, and stated "I look for things like that, especially here in New jersey where they try to oufox the [ox." . The first loop of the day was liked best by riders such as Martin, who thought those trails were excellent, and by Open B riders Stanley Bohenek and Mike Hoover. Bohenek, riding a 500cc Husky, thought the trails were nice and he didn't mind the sand, but said "a little less whoops would have been nicer, but overall it was a fun and well-organized event." Hoover, also aboard a Husky,(sponsored by Evelyne Hoover and Arch Palterineri) com men ted on the first loop and said he enjoys sand runs. Other rider who obviously enjoyed the sand were: High Point A and fourth overall rider P. Maroney, and High Point B winner M. Kopie. Also ha.ving a terrific ride was Women's Division Champ, Deborah Hickman, edging out G. Vandewater by [our points. Riders who did not fare as well included Husqvama's Mike Melton, who left the race early, Randy Hawkins, jeff Fredette, john Martin, Terry Cunningham and jeff Russell, . who finished eighth, ninth, 15th, 17th, and 18th overall. As riders finished the event, scorecards were taken immediately after the last check. Receipts were given and riders then returned to the campground, away from the scorekeepers. Results were tallied, then posted for protest period. With no major problems, trophies were handed out to complete this New jersey National, long-awaited by riders who enjoy riding in the sand. • Results GRAND CHAMPION: Kevin Hines 11 3).
