"Flyin' Mike" Faria (Jawa) earned his third-straight Scratch main event w in at Speedway USA in Victorville, California. Bobby " Boogal oo " Schwartz was the victim of a controversial call at San Bernardino, then came back the next night to win the Ascot Scratch main. semi, so he decided to take it out on the field in the Handicap main and for the second week in a row, he rolled to th e victory off the 40-yard line. Faria. riding like a man possessed , moved into second by turn two behind Jeff Johnson. John Sandona tucked in ' right behind Faria, a nd the three riders paraded around th e track in tight formation for three laps. then Faria rocketed under J ohnso n. Sandona was sunk as Faria had used J ohnson as a decoy, an d by th e time Sandona made hi s way past J ohnson, Faria wa s long gone a~d im itating a class C rider on a mil e track, as he tu cked his left hand behind hi s ba ck. Faria took it for th e seco nd week in a row with Sandona second: Lu cero got second wh en h e p a ssed J ohn son wh en the latter wheeli ed on the final revolution. Su per rookie Bobby Simons won both hi s Second Division heat and th e main from th e zero yard line. Tuff McBride claimed second with Jimmy O'Dell third. . Res ults SCRATCH : 1. Faria tops Speedway USA By Scott Da loisio VICTOR VILLE, CA, APR. 26 America 's hottest speedway rider returned to Speedway USA in Victorville, and for the third consecutive week: he captured 32 first spot in th e Scra tch main event. The rider is " Flyin '" Mik e Faria a nd the win wa s his 12th o f thi s yo u ng season (Scra tch and Handicap ). While Faria was cap tur in g the Scratch main , Ohio's Scotty Brown led a ll th e wa y in th e Handicap main event. Faria was totally unstoppable on th e Scratch side of th e .p ro gra m but had to work hi s wa y from third spot in th e excitin g four-lap main even t. Steve Lu cero, th e 1985 southern California point ch a m p ion, was first ou t of th e ga te ahead of Faria and Dave DeTemple. DeTemple th en shocked everyo ne when h e went ins ide both Faria and Lucero to ta ke the lead, as they came off turn two . DeTemple held the lead until turn two on the seco nd lap wh en Lucero a nd Faria sandwiched him. Lucero , who was on the inside, ended up with th e lead as they went into turn three, but as th ey came out of four . Faria sh o t by on the outside. Lucero hounded Faria th e remainder o f th e way but wh en th e checkered flag fell , it was Faria forthe third consecutiveweek. DeTemple finished in . third with Brad Oxley getting the wrap up. For Brown who arrived from Ohio th e week before th e event and in two Division One o u tin gs since his arrival , he has a third place and a win in Handicap action . Off th e 10 Brown held the lead over Tuff McBride a nd Kurt Strommer. Strom mer moved into second on th e fir st lap, but Walt Farnum quickly got by him and took up the chase of Brown. Farnum also got th e lead in turn one on lap two when Brown hit a hole in th e tra ck and drifted wide. Farnum was poised and read y to make his mov e. but Brown re·covered before he could get by. Farnum stayed cl ose all th e way and attempted to use th e in side lane a few times to pass, but Brown was eq ua l to the cha llenges and took his first so uth ern California win . Strommer took third, while Far ia ga rnered fourth . Northern California 's Mark Day (Wesla ke) made th e lon g journey to Speedway USA a useful o ne wh en h e ca p tured first-pl a c~ h on or~ in both h is heat and th e main event III Second Division off th e zero. Mark Coker cha sed Day in th e ma in but ra n o u ~ of tim e before the ch eckered fla g . Th ird spot went to yo u ng Bobby Simons who ca me all th e way from th e 30 yard line. Wayne Man ch ester won a hairy Third Division main even t from th e 10-vard line. Th e race had to be redflagged o n th e final circ u it after riders a n d bikes becam e sp ra wled a ll over the surface, but Man chester wa s on e o f the riders who man aged to stay upright. APR. 24 Bobby Schwartz was the victim of a contro versia l decision the previous evening in the Scratch main at Inland Motorcycle Speedway, so he m ay have felt th at he had so meth in g to prove at Ascot South Bay Stadium tonight. Schwartz definitel y proved a point as he led the Scratch main from th e green to the ch eckered flag. . Schwartz came into th e main event without winning a ra ce on the ni ght. He failed to transfer on th e Hand icap portion of th e program and finished se cond to John Sandona in his Scratch heat and to Alan Christian in th e semi. But when th e main roll ed arou nd Schwartz was more than ready . As the tapes flew up for th e start of the main, Schwartz rocketed out of gate four and took th e lead over Brad Oxley, Christian a nd Steve Lucero. Lucero relegated Christian to last before the end of lap one. while Oxley a p p lied th e heat to Schwartz. Schwartz held th e lead but Oxley. who had fini shed seco nd only moments before in the Handicap main, was determined to get by. He sta yed glued to Sch wartz 's rear tir e a ll th e way but he was unable to ge t p ast th e inte rna tio na l su pers tar and in the en d had to be co nten t with second again . Lucero maintained th ird with Christian ge tt ing paid for fourth. Oxley al so claim ed seco nd in th e Handicap m a in wh en h e fini shed behind " Fas t" Eddie Castro. Ca stro was clearl y on his ga me o n the night, as h e won all three or h is Handi cap rid es from the 20-yard line. J eff Johnso n , wh o had to park hi s Wesl ak e wh en th e o il lines burned . borrowed Mik e Faria's Jawa for th e main and was seco n d on th e sta rt but faded qui ckl y on th e unfamiliar mach in e. That put Oxley a nd Sandon a in the positio n of chas ing Ca stro. Oxley took the initiative and went Iter the F leet leader. Oxley was all over Ca stro but couldn't find a n opening. He hounded Ca stro all th e way to the chec kered flag for another hard-tough t second-place finish. Following Castro who turned in a ver y impressive ride was Oxley, Sandona a n d Ronnie Correy. . Ri chard Perkins ra cked up yet another Second Division main win. Perkins led all th e wa y. but in th e end, he faced a stiff challenge by Don Bu tler, who caught the leader out of the fina l corner, and they £lashed across the line side by side. Butler later laughed and said, "He beat me by about that much" and he held his thumb and index finger about a half inch apart. Perkins' win impressed the people from T eam Bla ze so much that he was made a member on th e spot. . Kurt Markahm (Jawa ) rode a flawless four laps to defeat Ken Berry and Anthony Frank in the Third Divisio n sh owcase. Results SCRATCH : 1. Bobby Schwertz (Wes); 2. Bred Oxley (Wes); 3 . In fact , it took Faria three laps [ 0 get pa st th e st ubborn Correy. Schwartz got th e gate from the pole in th e main and led the pa ck into th e first turn.
