Crew DA YTONA BEACH, FL, AP R . 20 The Da ytona Dirt Riders put toget her a n excep tional effort on short notice a n d ca me up with a 70-mile run cons isting of nearl y 40% new trai l. Husk y/Hi-Po int r ider Kevin Stevens took top honors with a good eigh t-point ri de to strengthen h is h old o n th e lead i n the Fl o rida Trai l R ider en d uro ser ies . A goo d va riety of tra i ls a nd p roper check placement saw most of the riders down a few p oints but back o n time a t the gas stop . T h e fi rst h our of r iding a t 18 m ph lulled many of the riders into a slow pace, then dumped t he m into so me tight st u ff w h ere it wa s o n the gas to the nex t check. The second h alf was m ore challenge wi th a lot o f n ew tr ail s a nd a m in imum o f six p oints lost in o ne section . A 20. minute reset a nd a n easy last si x mi les p u t nearly everyone back o ntime or early a t th e fin ish. Second o vera ll was AA ri der Bob O sborne with II points, foll owed by the A-Open Dean Kronenwetter with 12 points. One o f the best rides o f the da y was by sen io r ci ti zen Paul Bu xe w i th a 12-po int ride in th e Senior-A class, followed by J oe H al ey w tih o n ly 14 points. Pi c kin g himself u p a nd look- Kerker powered Bubba Shobert rode into history at Phoenix, becoming the third rider to ever complete a "Grand Slam "; winning in short track, TT;half mile, mile and road race events. With Kerker at his side, wmnmgwas really his destiny, because as Cycle News reported, :'. . the person getting the most p ower to the ground usually ended up in front."
