Possum Hollow's Anniversary MX By Brad and Sharon Jones SPRINGFIELD, MO, APR. 20 Doug Fellers and Jeff Schumacher showed off their awesome riding skills with big battl es in the Possum Hollow Eighth Anniversary race. In th e first 250cc Expert m oto, Fell ers burned around th e tra ck, pulling to a safe lead ahead of j ack Lambert, Bart Shiflett, and j oe Bu rke in only a couple of laps. Meantime, all eyes were on Schumacher , as he found himself a ha lf-lap down from a firstturn tangle. Schumacher picked orr riders every lap. making a wild leap orr the finish line jump that sa iled him past john Lambert for fifth place. In moto two, jack Lambert got th e ho leshot, but Fellers slammed his . way past in a short time to tak e over th e lead. Schumacher-did th e same to Lambert soon after. but Fellers had th e boosters on, and pocketed a threesecond lead 'o ver the " Sch u" to tak e th e win . _ In th e 125cc Expert class. Steve Forkner sho t out of the starting grid to a short-lived lead, as Fell ers and Schumach er ra ced by. Fell ers opened up a sm a ll lead o ver Schumach er and th e tw o ran away from th e pack . Next was a close race, as Galen Floyd h eld o ff a hard-ch arging j oe Burke a nd Brent Shiflett. M oro - tw o sa w Schumacher take th e start with Fell ers shadowi ng. Fell ers j u m pe d past Schumach er, th en Schumach er cut in side and repassed . Fellers took a quick tumble. giving Schu so me breathing room to tak e th e moto win and the overall. Fellers fin ished seco nd only a few seconds back. Burke outran johnLambert to finish third. In the 250cc Intermediate class, R ich Blackmore and Bill y joe Graham were putting o n a show in front of the pack, but Perry Scott showed what being aggressive really means by passing the entire class to take the lead . Scott got carried away and missed a banked turn and had to re-enter the course in second. Blackmo re he ld his ground fo r the win . In moto two , Black mo re had the u p per hand on the start on ly to have Scott, o nce again, bl aze through the pack and ba nza i the finis h li ne j ump, passing Blackm ore with one la p to go for th e win. O R, APR. 6 Washington 's Larry Ward came from Seattle armed with a pair o f Ka wasakis and came away the dominant rider in the Pro classes a t round 14 of th e AMA Oregon Winter /Spring Series o f Mot ocross. Today . Ward wh ip pe d the 125 a nd . 250cc P ro classes, going I-I in th e 250/0 pen P ro class a n d nabbin g th e 125cc P ro laurels wit h 2- 1 ri des . T he first 125cc P ro mot o saw Washingt on 's Sco tt Steffy (Ya ma ha) p ush h is YZ into th e lead with local rider Gary " Bad Boy" Beyer (Honda) a n d Suzuki ride r Glenn Hunter in tow . Ward rode near th e end of th e pack on lap o ne , but by lap three. th e T eam Green rider settled into th e top five. U p front it wa s Steffy a nd Beyer battling in the deep, loam y sa nd until Beyer unloaded, which left th e door open to Ward, who was right there to devour second in Beyer 's demise. Ward then settled within two bikelengths of Sterry and had but two laps to make his move. Ward tried severa l times but SteHy h eldon for the win . Beyer took third and john " Wild ma n " Woodley (Kawasaki ) was fourth . In moto two, Ward, Beyer and SteHy entered turn one, three abreast w ith Ward qu ickly leaving th e competi tion beh ind . Beyer and Steffy battled again for the n umber two slot, as it was clearly a p parent that Ward had the lead for keeps . Beyer again bailed orr, which put Steff y into a lone seco nd , until Woodley rallied to th ird a fte r ge tti ng a mi serable sta rt. The Suzuki B Production Expert event, part o f th e Suzuki GSXR Series, sta rte d in a tight batt le for first place a nd co nt in ued that way through all eigh t laps to th e fin ish. APR. 20 The fourth round of FMC's 1986 Spring Series was held in Fitzgerald, Georgia today, at the Tri-County MX track, with the largest class of th e day being the l25cc Amateur class. . j u m p in g to a n early lead was Yamaha-mounted Hugh Adams. Kevin Trice (Kawasa ki) wasn 't giving him much breathing room as he tried to find an opening to pass. T hird and fourth had their own race going on between De ll Ellanson (Kawasa ki) and Lonnie Blackbu rn (Kawasaki ). On the second lap , Blackburn found the hot line and took over third . Adams and Trice were busy ' getting around lapped riders when Irwin Lawson made his pass stick on Ellanson. H alfway through th e moto, Trice a p p eared to tire out. as Blackburn cla imed possession of second, dropping Trice to th ird. Blackburn wa s now burning a hot trail with Adam s h is next victim. On th e white-fl a g lap, Bla ckburn got th e chance he wa s looking for and we n t a fter Adams. Aft er getting pa ssed by Blackburn o n th e last lap. Adams regained his composure and once again wa s th e leader, taking th e flag with Blackburn second; Trice third and Ellanson fourth. The battle for the lead was already heating up fast in th e seco nd moto with Trice in the lead; Adams second; Lawson third and local rider Ro nn ie Pa rr ish (Ya m ah a) fourth . During the first three laps, the top four positions held . but in the fourth lap, Bla ckburn was making up for a bad start and took over fourth .
