Factory Honda rider Eddy Lejeune bounced back at the Spanish World Championship trials with a convincing win. He 's now second in points. After sitting out all last season, American Bernie Schreiber (35Occ Yamaha) finished eighth in Spain; his best finish so far this year. At su b 12 Lejeune was the o n ly rider 10 lose less th an si x in tot al o n the earthe rn bank. Then four Bri ts arrived toge ther at su b 14; H aro ld Cra wford , La mpkin, Gerald Ri char d: son a nd Tony Scarlett were faced with a n awesome rock face akin to a fortress buttress. Onl y Gerald made th e top for a three. Bern ie Schreiber o n a full 350cc Yam ah a was ge lli ng well u p the section 'when he was balk ed by another rider wat ch in g hi s at tem p t. but mad e a ma sterl y recovery for a dab . Bosis made the o n ly first lap clea n , effort lessly, with Lejeune and Sa u nders em ula ting him on lap two. Saunders a lso had th e best com bined score here, with a two and clean. Lejeune failed on lap o ne, his onl y fiasco o f th e trial, when he gro u nded hi s su m p o n a ledge within sig h t of th e ends cards. Mich aud' s two mark lead a t th e first group was lost 10 Berlatier, who a t th is point led the trial from Lejeune by one mark from Tarres in third. I.ejeune domin.ates Spanish .trial By Eric Kitchen P ER AMOLA, SPAIN, APR. 13 Eddy Lejeune (Honda) had his best World Championship win for ages on Sunday and showed that he is still very much a contender for a fourth world crown, annihilating the 76-s tro ng oppositi on in th e fourth rou nd o f the World T ria ls Championship at Perarnola, Spain. 22 Current leader of the champions hip, 'T hierry Mic haud (Fa ru ic), was in thi rd p lace beh ind a very m uch o nform Ph ilip pe Berl ar ier, who took the mon o Ap ri lia to its best wor ld cha mpions hi p results yet, Mich aud still lead s th e 1986 title chase, but h is advantage is cu t to just two points following his wor st world ro u nd result in 23 trials. ,The last tim e Mich aud was low er than seco nd was a t th e 1984 Frenc h round! It was a black da y for Brita in with o n ly Steve Saunders (Honda) gell ing in th e points. Steve had a disastrous ope n ing lap in 15th place, but im p rov ed co ns ide ra bly to secu re a fin al ninth place. H e drops to a safe third in the cham pi onship but will be looking for a drastic improvement in two wee ks time in Fran ce. J ohn Lampkin was 17th and Ton y Scarlett 19th. . T he British contingent was hoping th a t Sa u nders co u ld improve on his second pl ace of last year, bu t today proved 10 be Sa u nder's un lu cky da y. The o peni ng group of four sections was his und o in g. T he very tigh t watery sections in a rocky g u lly cla imed th ree fives and a three for a tot al of 18, one less tha n winn er Lejeune was 10 lose for the wh ol e lap. Saunders' first lap o f 38 ma rks was seven more than Lejeune' s fina l tot al . yet he was still th e best Brit , for J ohn Lampkin was on 43. Mich aud left th e first gro up with a slender lead . His tot al of six was two bet ter than Berl ati er, Leje u ne and J ordi Tarres (Beta) . It was Diego Bosis (Mo n tesa) who fin ally clean ed th e first sub, onl y to do a Ll-tu rn mid- Mich aud and Bosis were eq ua l fourth. But from th e next gro up it was Lejeune wh o was in com ma nd, and by the end o f th e lap he had a one mark adva ntage over Berlati er and Bosis. Michaud was fourth , Burgat next, the n Tarres aft er a short spe ll of mark losin g. With two thi rd of the seven hour 20-minute tim e allowa nce tak en on th e first lap, Lejeune sped a ro u nd on hi s seco nd with a sci ntilla ting lap of just 12 marks to add to hi s fir st lap tot al of 19.
