Scott Burnworth (18) took the holeshot in the main ahead of Ron lechien (2) and Ward. lechien crashed a lap later; Burnworth finished fifth. (Above) Jeff Ward cuts in front of A.J . Whiting to pass . (Below) Johnson (5) tries to get around Johnny O'Mara late in the main. left turn early in the race , but the door was slammed shut sending Ryan into the haybales. Ryan crashed, got back up and finished a distant second. 260cc Main 12 Shortly after 11:00 p .rn., the gate dropped for the 250cc main. jamming into the first turn, side-by-side were Burnworth, Bowen and Lechien. After stuffing each other through the following few turns, Bowen was leading the way ahead of Burnworth, Lechien, Cooper, Ward, Holland and Bailey. johnson was nearly dead last halfway into the first lap after getting caught by the backwards-falling starting gate. "I was watching the other guys twitching . on. !;he. line," sa id johnson , " and I thought I was late. Instead, I jumped too soon .and, bit the gate. I was pretty n rvous. Right after that, I passed five guys in th e whoops, but my fron t,.wheel washed out in the turn under he bridge." Up front, the baufe raged on for the lead. During the second lap,« Lechien slipped by Burnworth and was pressuring BmJen for the lead but clipped the Yamaha's rear wheel and crashed in a turn, dropping him out of contention. At the sametime, Ward made his move on Burnworth and forced his way into second. By now, Bailey had worked his way up and was challenging Ward for second. The duel didn 't last for long as Bailey shot by Ward and set after Bowen. The factory Yamaha nder held on to the lead for one more lap before Bailey dove inside in a turn to take over th number ne RQsition. Once into the lead, Bailey pulled away and was never challenged for the rest of the way. Still up for grabs, though, was the battle over second. Ward and Bowen swapped places a number of times before Ward labored back into second. But it didn 't last for long. Bowen got a second wind and suprised Ward when he snuck by again. Pressuring Ward from behind was Burnworth, who was closely chased by O'Mara, and the hardcharging johnson, making the order read Bailey, Bowen, Ward, Burnworth , O'Mara, johnson and Holley. Two laps later, Bowen crashed handing second back to Ward, while O'Mara and johnson slipped by Burnworth. At this point, Ward began to fade when both O 'Mara and johnson snuck by the Kawasaki rider. The last remaining duel of the race was between O 'Mara and johnson. It went on for six laps, with johnson pushing O'Mara in every turn and jump. "I was getting a little nervous," said O'Mara. "He (Johnson) was riding real agressive, and I thought he was going to land on me a couple of times. He was shoving me out in the turns, but that's just the way he rides ." The pounding eventually caught up to O'Mara and johnson finally jammed to the inside to take over second. By this time, johnson had no chance of catching the high -flying Bailey, who took his fourth win of the series, followed by johnson, O'Mara, Ward, Burnworth, Holley, Liles, Bowen, King and Holland. ..At first I didn 't think I could catch up after my start," said johnson . "But I started picking off a bunch of riders right away. O'Mara was the toughest guy to get around. He's riding real smooth and was rid, ingall my lines. Basically I don't feel bad tonight. I rode a good race, and I know I could've beaten David if I got a good stan, but I know -rh a t he doesn't think that." 125cc Pro-Am The start of the 125cc Pro-Am main saw Manneh edge into the lead ahead of Richardson , Turpin and Schmit..:r~ ~ in did!l't ~as te an y t!!n!i • going to work; his first victim was Richardson. After that, Turpin aimed his sights on the leader Manneh. During the second lap, Turpin made a dramatic pass on Manneh over a double -jump. After exiting a tight right-hander, the two were side-byside, with a double jump a few feet away. Both riders clutched it and sprung into the air, where they collided. Manneh got the worst of it , knocking him a little out of shape. Turpin kept his Honda straight and took over the lead. Manneh held on to second for six laps before getting passed by Vohland, then Schmit. The battle over second was intense between Vohland, Schmit and Manneh, which lasted for the entirety of the race . Near the end, though, Schmit got out of shape when trying to pass Vohland and insead lost a postion to Manneh. At the finish, it was Turpin way out in front, followed by a closely knit pack . of Vohland, Manneh, Schmit, Richardson, Kawasaki rider jeff Matiasevich and Ray Sommo (Yamaha). • Results 125 PRO-AM : 1.
