Faria had a wild get orr on the Ha nd icap side of th e program, but that did not hinder the slender 29-year-old on the Scratch side as he ca p tu red all three of his . races incl ud in g the main event. It was another chi lly evening in the high desert, but the racing was spectacu lar and kept th e fans on the edge of their seats a ll night, Faria, coming off a second place finish the previous night at Costa Mesa, was second out of the gate fro m ine number three position at the stan of the main event, but as the pack came off turn two on lap one he chopped down in Iront of Rob P fetzing and it was clea r sai ling the remainder of the wa y. This was Mcfsride's first Div ision One appea rance in Cal ifornia since h is last visit a co u p le of seasons back a nd he made th e best o fi t, Coming from th e 10 he was trailing zero- yard line starter Loui s Kossuth. McBride qui ckly closed in o n Kossuth and rod e around him at the end of the (irs t revolution . McBride slowl y built up a co rn forta ble lead whi le Wah Farnum began to close in o n Kossuth. McBride had th e win wrapped up barring mechanical failure while a bail ie was shap ing up for seco nd betw een two of speed way's up a nd co m ing rid ers. Kossuth held off th e advances of Farnum all the way lO the checkered when Farnum went to the inside a nd gra bbed thi rd .• by a spoke. Ra ndy Skinner (Hallma n Racin g/ Warren Reid Racing/ Sm ith Go~gles j a wa ) won the extremely exciting and competitive Second Divisio n main. Skin ner kept his co mposure • a ll the way and he had to as the ot her five competitors were nippi ng at his heels a ll the way . The leader made h is only miscue as he came off turn four on the founh revolution when he momentari ly bob bled and drifted wide. He q uickl y got back on the throttle a nd maintained a sm a ll advantage over Don jackson which he carried the remaining one lap. Third spot was taken by Doug Bowers. Chris Land (Weslake) took thewin by a sizable margin in Third Division over local riders Scou Welte and Brian King. They were the only survivors of th e original six rider field . Results SCRATCH: t. All d uri ng the H i-P o int series , promot ed by R &D En terprises a nd sanctioned by th e AMA, young Zemk e had been havi ng difficult y gell ing arou nd ho t Iirst-vear Novice Will ia m Luker fro m Salinas. In bo th the 60cc and 80cc fina ls Zemk e had the lead before reachi ng th e back stretch a nd he concentra ted o n CUll ing co nsistent lap tim es a nd usin g the sa me successful lin e eac h and every lap. T he plan and exec u tio n of it were succes fu l as Zemke was not p ressu red by Luker in eithe r even I. Luker was perhaps conten t to lose th e battle but win th e war for he did win th e Hi-Point series and was a ble to walk off (with help) with a five-foot-high troph y for the championship. Pa trick Vacchiri, like Zem ke, was ab le to put together two victories on the fina l n ight of racing at the 118mile fairgrounds facility. And , a lso like Zem ke, the effort came too la te to do any good toward winning the Hi Po int series. In the 250cc Novice division two final it was Antone Mellow on a Yamaha from Marina with the early lead. Vacchiri tried an outside pass each time he exited tu rns two
