OK. AP R. 6 Halfway through the H o nda Series, former O klaho ma Slate Champion J im Thomas is the ma n to bea t in two classes. Today's victory in the Open Amateur class. however , was loaded with suspense. T homas had just a one-mote rest a fter his hard -fough t Over 30 victory over Robert Reynard before he ret urned lO actio n in the Open Amateur class when he di scovered a Flat rear tire . With no lime to cha nge th e lire, supporters he lped Thomas add some stop-leak a nd air. His late arriva l at the gate resu lted in a midpack stan. The Honda of J DC Dyer forged in to a lead which he quickly built as Thomas began to work his way forward. Midway through the moto, Thomas was in second and closing, but his Yamaha developed handling problems as the tire lost air once again . The KT M of Mike Redd ing began to pressure as Thomas had his hands fu ll just keeping his bike out of the trees on the right Motorcycle Raceways track. Redd ing closed in every comer but Thomas was ab le 10 hold him off on the few short straights. Dyer co ntinued to build his lead and Thomas held o n for second p lace. The stage was set for moto two. The tables were turned in the second moto , Reddi ng picked th e holesh o t and while Thomas was in third, Dyer left the stan dead last. In round one, Redding whi le in close pu rsu it of Thomas.dropped it in a slow corner on the last la p a nd appeared determined 10 erase th e memory of th e bad luck. Thomas, in the meanti me, pushed pas t J o hn Wilban k and bega n 10 close on Redd in. In the back of the pa ck , Dyer struggled to recover from the poor stan, but mis cue a fter miscue kept him at the rear a nd out of contention . With lWO laps 10 go, Thomas found th e opening he was looking for and th e rest is history. Kerker has won more races, on more tracks, than any aftermarket system.
