T he morning turned into a challenge to co m ba t th e slime on th e track as well as one 's co m pe ti tors. With th e poor weather , th e classes were smaller th an normal for th e California Min i Motorcycl e Clu b (C MMC) MX. The l 25cc Open class fou nd JT Racin g/ T on y Smi th Racing-sp unso red Steve Furuya wi th th e h olesh ot, but close ly followed by J im Cha mberla in. Fu ruya 's fine ly tu ned Yamaha was just too m uc h for Cha mber lai n and his \98\ Suzu ki and h e wa s never quite abl e to p u ll o ff th e p a ss. Through the th ick mud a nd ra in , Kawasak i West 's Ma tt Shu msky a nd Ar t H iggins, o n th e Team H onda/ Honda of Poway Honda , ba tt led for the th ird spot. In the first lap, Cha mberla in went for th e pass, but didn't quite m ak e it a s he dro p ped the bike to th e ground in hi s attempt. H e regain ed h is composure quickly and retain ed seco nd. H ig gins again took the th ird posi tio n. The overa ll wi n went to Furuya , with C hamberlain second, and H igg in s third. There wa s p lenty of acti on in the 80cc Begin n er cla ss as th e mud gave these riders m any prob lems.
