Dave Strijbosand his Cagiva bounced back into the lime-light at the Dutch round of th e I 25cc World Mot ocross Championship a t Mill, northeast of Eindhoven . scoring two outright victories a nd heading home fellow countryman John Van de Berk (Yam a ha) each time. In doing so, Strijbos jumped straight onto the series standings at number six. Teammate and current title leader Pekka Vehkonen was happy only to loose 10 of the 40-point advantage he held over Strijbos at the start of the day as he picked up two third placin gs, the Finn now with an IS-point advantage over compatriot Arto Panttila (KTM) who could do no better than sixth and eighth p laces in the Dutch sand. . Van de Berk and Strijbos made th e first race their own from the drop of the gate, opening up a gap on the rest of the field within two laps: Once th ey had shaken off Erik Stuurman, the pair cleared off to fight their own duel . Strijbos following every line Van De Berk took until two laps from home, when Van de Berk made a slight mistake under the pressure and went over a berm. The Cagiva m an needed no second invitation and blasted throught into the lead and the checkered flag. Defending ch ampion Vehkonen didn 't make the best of sta rt s and for half th e race he would do no better than sixth pl ace, hampered in part by a cras h on th e tri ple j urn p. The Finn seemed to ch ange h is taco tics for th e seco nd half of the race and once he demoted Peter Dirckx he went on to cha lle n ge Stuurman , who had slipped by when he .wa s down. With him out of the way Pekka set off after the flying Dutchman at the fron t but h e couldn't clos e the gap. Fellow Finn Mika Kouki missed the start completely and at the end of lap one was ba ck in 21st place- H e gradually p icked hi s way through th e pack until he enga ged with cornpatrior Arto Panttila. He finally managed to squeeze through two laps from home and com ing up to the flag was chasing Direckx but was lapped by Strijbos in th e closing yards. leav- Holland's Gert-Jan Van Doorn f inished th ird in the 250cc GP . ' ing Dirkx as th e last man to fini sh on the same lap as th e lead er. Sa nd special is ts Anton Pru ijmboom and th e ever-p rese nt Stuurrnan were next with Ism o Vehkonen sp litting three m ore local sa nd -masters -eRijkers, Van Asten and Gool aert s. Pekka Vehkonen m ad e n o m istak e a t th e sta rt o f race two . but a fter two laps th e crowd o f 12,000 wer e running a ro u nd with exc iteme nt as a determined Strijbos bla sted through to ta ke tire lead. A furth er four laps into the ra ce a n d Van de Berk pushed Pekka Vahkonen back to third spot. The gap to Strijbos, however , wa s too big for th e Yamaha man to close and he had to settle for second. Kouki was next home in fourth spot, this time judging the start well. but striking problems in the first turn when he had to ride round a bunch of fallen riders. This time his ch arge took him from 13 th on la p one through to fourth. For h is efforts, in addition to moving into third spot in the points standings. he was awarded a new trophy as the best performer of the day. Panttila had been involved in the first turn p ile up but grittily fought his way back into the points, just failing to catch Dirkx at the close. with his clutch slip p ing like mad! There were no major surprises in the minor placings, but in contrast with last weekend's French l25cc event th e sun was shining pleasantly and the start straight was watered before the start of each moto. Italian Alberto Barozzi obviously liked the sunshine and earned h is firs t world ch ampionship points for the new Benell i factory team, • Results OVERALL: 1.
