T he fir st Novice to tak e th e ch eckere d fla g wa s Hunting ton Bea ch M.C.'s O pen class rid er Dirk Davidow (H usq va rn a) in 92nd overall. " It wa s grea t," h e said . "The first loop wa s rea lly dusty but th e seco nd loop was eas ier because everyo ne spread o u t a nd it was fa st a nd smoo th ." Th e seco n d Novice to fini sh wa s Da rren Schmid t, wh o ca me in two m inutes beh ind Da vidow to ta ke fir st in th e 250cc class, in 103rd over a ll. T he third Novice across th e lin e, a no ther two min u tes ba ck fro m Sch m id t, was 250cc rider Andy Nelso n, with th e seco nd O pen class Novice, Eric Andresen, right o n hi s tail. The fir st Novice C-bike to cross the lin e was a l 25cc Ka wasa ki pi lot ed by Dan Smith's litt le broth er , Frank. " T h e first loop was definitely a 500cc co u rse - too fa st Iorme, bu t I loved th e seco nd one." said Smi th . One o f the h appiest riders o f th e day wa s the first Super Senior hom e in the Novice cla ss. H onda rider Man fred Sch ne ide r o f th e 4 Aces sai d th e o n ly problem with winning hi s cla ss was that it cou nt ed a s a transfer ride. " I don' t wa nt to go two loo p s," he sa id a t the finish . "T h e co urse was reall y ro ugh wi th a lot of crossgrai n ed stu ff. I had a ba ll , bu t one loo p is reall y enough for m el" Amon g th e Beginners, th e ho nors went to Open rider Cha rles San ford IV (H usq va rn a) in h is seco nd desert race, wit h Jim Corning 's 250cc Husky co m ing in for seco nd o vera ll a n d first in cla ss. A spokesma n for th e Rovers, Kenn y Parry , sai d th e clu b was pl eased wi th the 534 rid ers who turned o u t for th e race. Parry sai d th e Rovers had offered a $ 100 part ici pa tio n prize to th e cl u b with th e most entries, a nd it looked a s th ough th e 100's M.e. wou ld be ta king th e money wit h 44 racers. Parry also a polo gized on beha lf o f the Rovers for lack o f rib bon in so me ~ect i o ns o f th e co urse. Parry sai d th at th e club had fini sh ed m ar kin g th e co ur se o n Thursdav, b ut tha t some of the markings had been blown do wn in ex trem ely hi gh winds o n Friday a nd Saturday. Pa rry sai d cl u b mem bers had not been a ble to co m p letel y restore th e lost m ar kin gs in time for th e race . In a n un usua l move designed to make pi tt ing safer for the riders and their pi t crews. the Ro vers im posed a 20-mph spe ed lim it on bik es in the p its. Most ri ders coopera ted wi th th e 20-mph rule a nd seem ed to su pport th e id ea of ma king th e p its a little safer. On ly one rider seemed to di sagree wi th the idea of a spee d limit for safety, a nd th e H unting ton Beach M.C.
