Fu lmer developed cha in problems at the stan a nd decided to sit out the rest of the day. Also , ha lfway through th e day , Dawson dropped out wi th mechanical problems. ") had a good ride going, today," said Dawson. "I think) caught up to second and was gaining ground on the leader in the special test. But during the second special test, I think:) lost a main bearing. I'm disappointed because) wanted to put up a good showing. I wanted 10 show 'em that) could do the job. Oh well , I guess that 's the way it goes." Other than that, none of the top riders dropped any points on the trail, except Summers, who lost a minute at check 10. Irwin came close when he came into the second gas check 10 minutes late due 10 a flat tire . He changed the tube and still had two minutes 10 spare. H oess and his 250cc Husky crashed hard on the trail during the first loop on day two, causing him to slow. " Nea r the first check, I caught a tree between my lever and handlebar, and that drilled me into the ground," said Hoess. " T h is slowed me down a lillie bit for the rest of the da y. My arm stiffened up because of the fall, so m y special test wasn 't so hot." Husky's Jeff Russell (250cc, sixth after day one )continued to do well o n the trail. not losing any points. but he had his problems in th e special tests. The fin al test o r th e da y was th e motocross special test. Each lap was a Iittle over two m iles, and each race lasted for five laps. Only 14 points (o r seconds) separated Ballard from RoeseIer going into the motocross event, so the overall was definitely still up for grabs. Ballard's rnoto came before Roeseler 's, which saw the Australian jam right into the lead after the deadengine stan and win from start 10 finish, collecting 847 points, the best (lowest ) score yet . Roeseler 's mota was last, and he wa s practicing staning his big four-stroke Husky just before th e mota. with it starring nearly every time on the first kick . But when the green flag dropped, it took two ki cks for his Husky to start, which mighr 've cost him th e ov erall. Roeseler was nearly dead last going into the firs t turn , but a few turns la ter, he was in second , trying 10 pass Kadlec. Kadlec got out o r shape and the two riders collided hard with Kadlec goi ng down . He recovered in second, while Roeseler jammed into th e lead and easily pulled away Ior the win. But the first-lap traffic was enough to keep Roeseler from beating Ballard 's score. Special test scores again favored Ba lla rd this day . In all three tests, Ba lla rd was the fastest rider, which secured the overall win. He took the overall over Roeseler, 2743-2775. Kadlec wound up third overall, second 500cc with 2806 points. Hough cleaned up in the 250cc class, while Postel captured the 125cc win over Perkins.
