Rogers. spo n sored by Moro-X Fox/ Seen U SA/ Bell / N D/and Portland ATV. pull ed the holeshot an ? led a tight pack down th e long strai ghtaw ay to a righ t-h ander. In the fi rst mo to of the 125cc P ro class Kawasak i-mounted Kenn y Olsen took th e hol eshor, In no time at a ll O lsen had a -Hl-va rd lead o n Reid Gold ma nn . who had 20 yards o n the pack. Going up hi ll o n the north side o f th e tr ack . most o f th e P ros were hi tt ing th e d rop-off jump a nd clea ring th e next j u m p a nd landing cl ear up o n th e flat . On lap two Kurtis Rog stad passed Bill Holtman a nd then both of them squeezed past Mike Bell. Lap three sa w Hunter pass Davidson and Bell re-pass Holtman . O ut in the middle J on Davidson fell near th e side of a j u m p and was slow to get going again. T he fourth la p had Rogs tad re-passing G lenn Hunter whi le Bell wa s hanging out over the bars a fte r hilling the whoop-de-does on th e west side of th e track . Olsen took th e chec kered flag while doing a neat sp read eag le o ver the tabl e top jump in front o f th e sco ring tower. Behind him in order wer e Rogstad . Goldm ann. Bell , Hunter , Davidson and H oltman. In th e seco nd an d fin al m ota Bell was out front foll owed by Olsen. Goldmann , Holtman . Rogstad. Hunter and Davidson. The whol e pack ran ultra-close for two laps. Bell hit th e big starting line jump a little too far back on his bike and got su p er out of shape. but he saved it by landing with th e rear brake on a nd sla m m ing ba ck forward. On lap two H unter got massive air on th e sa me jump an d used h is momentum to gain two positions. Lap three saw Davidson move past Holtman a nd G oldmann a lm ost lose it over th e west wh oops. On lap four Goldmann go t ultra sidewa ys over th e big jump and made a fantasti c sav e bUI he slow ly p ulled over to the left side of th e tra ck. He probabl y kn ocked th e wind out of himself. Rogstad and Dav idson ran side-by-side for qu ite a way s unti l Rogstad fin a lly pulled ahead going up hill. His spe ed over th e drop off jump carried him wa y up o n th e flat. For three laps th e orde r remained th e sa me . Hunter wa s ge lling supe r air o n th e to we r tabl e la p jump whil e running with 65 yards o n bo th sides o f him. MA R. 23 Team Green 's Mike Jones o pe ned the motocross racing season at H ickory Hills with wins in the l25cc A and 250cc A classes. Jones. sti ll recovering from a shoulder injury sustained a t Daytona severa l weeks ago. had to pass R od ney Phill ips (Ya m ) in the 250cc class to take the win. In the 125cc A ra ce. Shane Slather h ad a slight edge on J ones and Pat Hoover for severa l laps. But Jones quickly reeled in th e hard-charging Siothei to ba g th e win. Slather and H o ov er fini sh ed 2-3 f or the da y. Slather al so took th e Sch oolboy class o ver Dan Black ham . In o ne 250cc m o to, Philli ps had th e lead for several la p s unt il a broken motor moun t bo lt slowed h im lo ng eno u g h for J ones to slip past o n th e inside o f a berm. Tria lsmastersjoe Ige, R ick Flowers and Jerry Bridges h ad laid o u t a very technical IO-section loo p among the roc ks and boulders of the Agua Fria R iver bottom. Section T hree was described as "rude" with 10lSof roiling river rock. While most riders earned fives and threes here. P yle was able to manage a one through the treacherous trail. U nsea so nable hot weather also was a factor. causing more than one rider to drop out before co m p leti ng th e assigned three loops. Todd R o pe r was second Expert with a good ride a nd a score of 38 on his Yamaha. Ba ck a ways at 51 was Andy Saum (Yamaha) for third with Greg Jones on a Yamaha and Bob Pen n i ng ton on a Honda filling out the top five at 63 and i3,respectively . In th e Advanced class. Bob Till turned in a 65 for the win over Steve P ressler (6 ), G lenn Wright (8i. 'lI's), Bruce Swarner (87, 2-I 's) and Charles King. All rode Yamahas, Back at 110 was Brian Root o n a n SW M. lo ne Sen ior Adva nced finisher. Intermediate di vision trialers were led by Montesa -mo unted Sha ne Weckerly at 45 wi th Mark Ma karov on a Honda and Jerry Tate and his Yamaha, bo th a t 46, counting Fs, Markarov laking second with II to Ta te's 4. At49wasJim Hunterona Yamaha . and Don Gard scored a 59 for fifth with his Fantic. John Lenon took th e Senior Int ermediates with a 5i an d a 20+ advan tage over George Naidl Sr. Fourteen Novi ces had fun but it wa s Will T errick in first place with a 34 for th e win . Kel sev Manning was seco nd a t 38 a nd Brenden Ro ot third at 45. BeginnerTim H askin had an excel lent rid e o n a n o ld Bultaco. His score o f just 28 points wa s less than half that of the second place Begin ner Tim Turpin. With a turnout of 55 riders.
