Meanwhile, Harold Robison and Carl Hand began thei r climb to th e fro nt o f th e pa ck pa ssing Mark Beam er , Greg Wheeler and George Pagonis. With two laps to go. Richa rds overtook Maurice-for seco nd , leaving Hand in fir st. Robison and Carl Hand worked their wa y to fifth a nd sixth while McCune slip ped past a tiring Mauri ce for the third place finish ; Maurice settled for fourth. In the second moto, Rob ison j u m ped to a seven second lead ahead of McCune, Dave Hand, Pagonis a nd Deu tsch. Pagon is lost h is bid for a top spot when he and Deutsch col lided in midair with Deutsch landin g on two wheels while Pago n is esca ped with minor cuts and bru ises and had to watch the remainder of the race from tra cks ide . Hand and Deu tsch q ui ckl y disposed of McCune. Midway through the race, Ro bison crashed leavi ng the way for Hand and Deu tsch to baule for first with Deu tsch pu lling ahead and holding on for th e wi n. McCune fin ished third wi th Carl Hand and Greg Wheeler fi n ishing fourth and fifth, respectively. Once again it was Jon Agi n making a doub le sweep of the 250cc B motos. In th e first moto, once through the first turn , th e top four riders, Agin, J eer Johnson , Shawn Gates and Marty Popovich held th eir respective place s th ro ugh th e entire moto. The second moto was a repeat of much o f th e sa me as Gates had to pla y second fidd le once aga in to Agin [or th e en u re race , Johnson worked hi s wa y through th e pack to pass Popovich on th e last la p o f the moto to finish in third place. James Cauarin took to p honors in the 125cc A class posting 2·2 moto fini sh es for first overall . In round one, Bak er set th e pace at a 7.33/184.80 , whi le Chris Hand o n the " Redneck Express" Kawasaki super nitroburner took second with a 7.43- 182.92. Third was Elm er Tre tt on a Kawasaki wi th ·a 7.61-152.54 run , whi le Kawasaki-mounted Mark Mill er p laced fourth with a 7.647173.03 pass. The Suzuki Iueler ridden by Larry McBride failed to keep fired • on two attempts and didn 't qualify th e first round . In round o ne, Baker and Larry McBride 's Suzuki faced off with Baker zooming to a proficient 7.210· 187.89 to McBride's stout 7.48-190.67. In the seco nd pairing, Hand prevailed as Tommy Brounko wski parla yed a gate-job gamble into a red light. Hand went 7.40·176 .80. When Covey a nd Trett went at it, Trett clicked-off a q uick 7.30·1 96.93 to Covey's 9. 19- 152.28. In the semis, Bak er a nd Ha nd had a close match -up with Baker edging the win, 7.226-187.89 to 7.51- I 76. 12. During the secon d semi, Trett went u p against Mark Miller. T his ru n was all Treu's, as he climbed to a 200 mph top speed, the firs t time ever in Dra gbi ke USA Championship Series competition, and the first ever at a IH RA race. T he final ro u nd ca me down to th e Baker/ T reu match up, but it was Baker 's da y, thanks to his Star Cycle entry. A fra ntic effort o n the part of so me 20 vol unteers soon ha d th e program ro lling and a large group o f en th usiastic an d gra teful racers took to the track wit h Mike Gresha m taki ng the Pro class win. T he race marked the first of many Pro-Am events scheduled to be hel d at Lodi this season and all of today's 16 entries in the P ro class rode like th ey wanted th e lion 's share of the purse. After so me whee l-to-wheel dicing in h is hea t, G resha m of O ro vill e came off the lin e in fro nt of the rest of the pack a t th e start of the main even t. Gresham was cha llenged th e entire 12 lap s by Dan McDonnell a nd Bo bby McDowe ll , but the narrow blue groove m ade p assi n g a lmost im p o ssib le forcing them to wai t for a mi stake that never came. At the fin ish line the tr io fini sh ed exactl y in the order th at th ey had begun . Sportsmen racing saw a double wi n ner as Sco tt Eich elb augh sewed up the number op e spots in both th e 500ccJun ior and Vet classes.
