And the to tal for a ll classes numbered an as toundi ng 600 en tr ies at Sears Point. . The field was so la rge that th e 750cc a n d Open Stock class es had to be sp lit into two separa te races ins tead of th e usu al two-wave start. T he' 750cc race wa s ru n fir st. It started off with Cra ig Seher o n an FZ750 and All en Satterlee on a GSX R750 cha rg ing into th e fir st co rner with their front wh eels still in the air. Malcolm Hi ll flew a little lower an d got hi s Suzuki there first to lead 49 o th er bikes up the hill. But before th e first lap was ha lf over, Scott G ra y had his Yosh im ura/ Dun lo p Suzuki in the lea d. Gra y h eld th e lea d and pushed th e mach ine even faster , turning I:52 lap times a nd stre tch ing o u t his lead . Th e battle for seco nd place h eated u p as Satterlee, H ill a nd Seher each moved from fo urth to second and ba ck agai n. T he ra ce looked like it had beco me a ba ttle for seco nd place, b u t G ray overhea ted h is tires a nd was forced to slo w, First Satter lee got past h im , a nd in th e last two laps H ill and Seh er slip ped by. H ill a nd Seh er kept up th e battle for second, but Satterlee wa s never threaten ed . Th e fin al order was Sa tterlee on h is Cycle Im ports Suzu ki , H ill on a T oomey Racing Suzu ki a nd Seher, followed by Gray. Gray d idn 't have a n Open class Suzuki with h im, but wh en th e sched ul e cha nge was a n no u nced , h e q ui ckly borrowed a Cycle Importssponsored GS X RIIOO fitted wi th a H i-Sport Mich el in rear tire . Morgan Mur phy beat G ra y off the starti ng line, but soon sa w G ra y ride o u t of sight. After the first lap, Gray held a two-second lead. Don Biava and Chris Stewa rd were di cing for seco nd and a ti ght kno t o f ri d er s, includin g Murph y, Barr y Sa uda n and Ma tthew Eri cson, were ba ttl ing for fourth . . Gra y stea dily stre tched ou t hi s lead wit h co nsis tent 1:50 an d 1:5 1 laps. Bob Reinen joined th e dice for fourt h, but Ericson sett led in to the position a nd was determ ined to hold it. Steward go t in front o f Bia va a nd pu lled aw ay o nce th ey began lapping slower rid ers. The finish was Gra y, Steward a nd Biava. So Ol iver en tered it in the 600cc Su pe rstreet cla ss. Wh en th e green flag dro p ped on th e 600cc S upers tree t ra ce, Tom Aq ui no grabbed the lea d h eading in to the first turn. By th e ti m e th e p ack h ad sorted it self o u t, Aq uino had a three-seco nd lead over seco nd place Ed Ragle o n hi s Red Eagl e Racing Yamaha . Oliver had golien off to a slo w sta rt , but soon ada p ted a flat tra ck riding style a nd began moving th ro ug h th e pa ck with h is foot o u t, slid ing th ro ugh eac h turn . At th e end o f th e seco n d lap, O liver and Rag le cro ssed the sta rt in g lin e wh eel-towh eel. Once pas t Ragl e, Oliver clos ed on Aq ui no.
