Atkins nails Colorado win By Larry Johnson co . SP RI NGS , CO, MAR. 23 Young Andy Atkins led both moLOS from sta n LO finish in winn ing toda y's 80cc Expert cla ss o n h is Yamaha . Atkins bea t Dina DeITurco in th e first mot a a nd J ared Ra mso ur in th e seco nd to cap tu re th e overa ll. Atkins gra bbed th e holeshot in turn o ne o f mota o ne foll owed by J eff Hopki ns a nd Ro bert Revoir. The two fo llowed Atkins for three laps, but sudde n ly Ramseu r burst pa st both o f them to take over the runnerup spo t. That didn't last long, however, as Ra mso ur smashed into a berm a nd cras hed ; he remounted near th e rear of th e pack while Atkins co nt in ued to stre tch a lead o ver th e field . DelTurco , meanwhile, was charging through traffi c after an eighthplace start, and on lap four, he passed Revo ir for third place. On th e next lap he zapped Hopkins to tak e over second, but he co uld n ' t ca tch Atkins. Rarn sou r, however , sho t to second o n the seco nd lap a nd stay ed g lued to Atkins the rest of th e wa y to tak e seco nd overa ll. DelTurco was a ble to reach third o n the sa me lap while slo wly gaining o n th e lead ers. He ran o u t of tim e, however, and had to settle for third overall. Dave Wollaston , the defend ing State Ch ampio n, eas ily won both Senior Expert motos , bu t each time he had to pass T erry Frydendall, who na iled both holeshots. Wollaston trai led Frydenda ll for over a lap in ro u nd one, befo re jamming past and pulling aw a y. Frydendall and Vic Barlish · con tested second for half the moto wh en Byro n WoIr came from nowhere and left them in his dust. Ba rlish event ua lly took over third and held it to the end. Wollaston and Wolf were right behind Frydendall co m ing out of the fir st turn in moto two a nd Wollaston wasted no tim e taking th e lead . While he was promptl y pulling away, Wolf wa s spending three laps trying to find a wa y around Frydendall. Once past, WoIr also pulled aw ay while Ba rl ish was aga in a ble to displace Frydendall for another third. Bobby Hancock was a perf ect I-I in the Senior Amateurs.
