Downey kept th e pressure on but Tager never faltered and took th e seco nd rnor o win fo r seco nd o vera ll behind Downey's 1-2 fin ish es. MAR . 29 Paul Iwanaga took his immaculately prepared 500cc short tra ck Honda to a first in th e 500cc Expert fin al and a seco nd in th e prestigio us Pro- Am Expert fina l in Monterey Co unty Fa irgrounds short trac k ac tio n . T he p laci ngs were not unex pect ed, for Iwan a ga (p ro no u nced E-wo -nog-a ) leads in th e H i-P o in t Spri ng seri es o f th e R&D En ter prises-pro moted even ts. In th e 500cc fina l, Iwanaga wa s grid-positioned thi rd by virtue o f h is h eat-race success and knew h e had to better Dan iel Moo re and Brad Spencer wh o had bea ten him in th e heat rac e, At th e g reen flag it was Moore into th e lead followed by Kenneth Nett o a nd Iwanaga . Wilhin a few laps th e from - runners sepa ra ted by severa l bike leng ths from th e others, Iwana/?a was a ble to barely mi ss a pile-up in turn th ree someh ow involving Ken Net to a nd Michael Gresham. Moore bobbled and Iwanaga ca p ita lized o n the slig h t m istake to tak e over th e lead. Wh atever was Moo re's pro blem didn't go aw ay for Craig J o h nson and Ra ben Da m ron were bot h able to ge t by. At th e chec kers it was Iwanaga by severa l bik elen gths o ver J ohn- son. follo wed by Damron.who had to re-pass' Moore a t th e checkers in a near photo fini sh . In th e Pro -Am Exp ert final Iwan a ga wa s the favor ite even th ough he had lost in th e hea t race 10 long-timerival Dan iel M oo re a n d h is h ot H onda . At the stan it wa s aga in ' Moore in th e lead with Nett o right beh ind on th e Ca n -Am ; Iwanaga was running third. Back in th e p ack Cra ig J ohnson went down in turn three a nd Woodrow Ro gers collided with th e ma chine a nd so me rsa u lted over th e top o f J ohnson a n d his mach in e. Wh en Rogers got to hi s feet he sna tch ed h is machine upright and prepared 10 gel back 10 th e battle that was getting a wa y. U n fort u na tely, J ohnson's left leg wa s stuck between (he shock a bsorber and rear tire on Rogers' machin e. The ra ce had 10 be stopped a n d it was man y painful minutes before tool s co u ld be brought to extra ct Crai g Johnson from Rogers' Yamaha. H e wa s ab le to walk awa y, slo wlv. In the restart, single file, Rogers was not permitted to participate beca use of h is involvem ent in the spi ll. This capped a disappointing even in g for Rogers, who had ma chine problem s in the h eat races and \'I3S elim ina ted by sp ills in both the 500cc Expert fin al a nd th e Pro-Am Expert fin al. On th e restart it wa s again Mo ore in th e Iront with Nella clos e on his rear wh eel.
