For the n ext few laps, positions remained th e sa me, but a tight battle o ver fo urt h between Ward, H olley, Bailey an d Kaw asaki 's Ron Lechien was in hi gh gea r. Lech ien wa s th e rider to watch as he worked hi s way up a nd passed Ward for fo urth , wh ile Bailey took o ver sixth. With o ne lap to go, i t . was J ohnson wi th a few seco nds o ver O 'M ara , wh o had h is h ands full with Gl over breath ing heavily dow n h is back. Foll o w in g Glover at a d istance was Lechien . Bu t less th an a h alf lap 10 go , L echien bailed o ver a jump and fell ba ck 10 six th. With th e checkered flag in sig h t, O 'M ara was within stri kin g distance of Johnson , while Glover lo oked for a n o pe n i ng a ro u n d O 'Mara. But th ere was none, and Johnson h eld o n for th e win ahead o f O 'Mara , Gl ove r , Wa rd , Ba il ey, Lechien , H oll ey, Alan Kin g , Bill y Fra nk and Hick s. Th e sta rt o f th e seco nd m oto sa w J ohnson nail th e hol esh ot and q uic kly pull away fro m O 'M a ra , Lechien, Bailey, H icks, Er ic Ea ton a nd H olley. Johnson 's lead g rew to a bo u t four seco n ds o ver O 'Mara , wh ile Bail ey mo ved i nto third a fter p a ssing Lechi en . Glov er was in fourth and catching L echi en , whil e Ward was 15th. A few laps later , Glover ree led in and passed Lechien , bu t found himself a long ways back o f Bailey. A few laps after that, Glover crashe d in a turn , los ing a position to Lech ien, but h e quickl y repassed th e Kaw asaki rider and began pulling awa y agai n . Up front, Johnson enj oyed a foursecond lead over O 'Mara, who held about the same dis tance over Bailey. G lover wa s nearl y 10 seconds ba ck . By this time, Ward had ,worked hi s way up to sixth but co u ld n' t gain any ground on Lechien. Late in th e race , it looked as tho ug h O'Mara might catch Johnson , but th e closest he ever got wa s three seco n ds ba ck . Bailey gave it hi s best and pressured O'Mara but couldn 't make th e pass. J ohnson crossed th e fini sh line fir st for hi s seco nd win of th e series , while O'Mara an d Bailey rounded out a H onda sweep . Gl over fini shed a di stant fourth ah ea d of Lech ien a nd Ward. Glover wound up taking th ird o verall , wh ile Bailey finished fourth . Fifth went to Lechien. " T h e win didn 't come th at easy," sa id J ohnson, " I don 't think th e other gu ys had a great da y. 1 was making a lot o f m istakes in th e tight sections o f the track where 1 usually excel. 1 co u ld' ve had a better da y - 1 co u ld 've gone fast er . " J o h n ny got pretty close to me in the second moto, " sa id J ohnso n , " bu t, it was because a lapped rider had crashed over the doubl e jump and th e yell o w fla g was out as h e push ed his bik e of£ the track . So I rode through th e doubl es, a n d by the time O'Mara came through, th ere was no yell ow flag and he double-jumped th em. That made a lo t of dif£erence. " "I 'm pretty pleased how 1 rode tod ay," sa id O 'M ara . "M y kn ee is feel ing pretty good , but 1 did bang it pretty h ard in th e second m or o.
