Burgess, KnoJC KOMedford arenacross By Clay Ught MEDFORD, OR, MAR. 15 Kawasaki-mounted Kevin Knox and Yamaha rider Lance Burgess made their return to the Jackson County Expo Park in 36 Medford to dominate the second night of arenacross racing inside CompLOn Arena. Burgess and Knox, both 125cc moullled, bauled in several classes, with Burgess coming out in frolll of Knox for the Open Pro class only to run second to fellow Californian Knox in the Open A main. lach Rund led a Honda parade in the 60cc A main for first place brass. Local radio stations plugged the airwaves with Lhe annoucemelll that Burgess was LO attempt LO clear eight cars inside CompLOn Arena, which was in addition to Lhe California resident's four-class quest. Burgess cleared Lhe cars and took $500 out of promoter Rich Word's pocket for the feat. Burgess, Lhe "crazy Californian," not only jumped it once, but was so jazzed that he came back to do it again, this time with only one hand on Lhe bars and the crowd wem wild! lach Rund (Hon) opened up the evening by topping Lhe 60cc A main event, much LO the delight ofthe local fans. Rund rallied to the from of the pack to put Joe Don Ireland and Kevin O'Conner in the second and third spots. Brian Guiles won out in an 80cc shootout in 80cc A action, beating Kawasaki riders Bryan "crash" Steele and fellow diminutive speedster Joie DePew. The l25cc A main event saw Burgess and Johnson in a wheel-to-wheel battle that was left over from last night. Johnson looked LO be the one to take the 125cc laurels away from fellow Californian Burgess, but to no avail. The duo did, however, do some heavy duty damage in Lhe race, giving the competition fits in the process of wrapping up the first and second positions. Todd Alter (Hon) continues LO improve with each outing and tonight finished a close third to the AMA Pro duo while Roseburg Yamaha's Monty Spalding guided his Yamaha imo fourth at Lhe checkers behind winner Burgess, Johnson and Alter. In 250cc action, the overflow amount of 250s were trimmed to eight for a single-row, 10-lap finale. Burgess came right back from his 125cc win armed with his trusty YZl 25 and pulled the holeshot over Mike Hamilton and Randy Toreson, both on Yamahas. NorLhern Californians Dave Creech and ex-Pro Mel Sample (Kaw) held down fourth and fifLh throughout the race, but would get no further as getting past both Toreson and Hamilton would be quite an accomplishmem - runaway leader Burgess was again ripping up the track that Word and company spem all day designing. Burgess easily defeated second place Hamilton, who in turn did a marvelous job of holding back Pro Toreson, Creech and Sample, who finished fifth. Knox and Burgess lined up a pair of 125s on the from row in the Open A main event and had a brutal battle for top brass. Burgess wamed a quadruple win badly, which would have gone down in Lhe SOMA record books as the first rider LO accomplish the task. But Burgess again would be denied a four-class win as Knox the door each time the motocross Pro attempted a pass. Knox took a hardfought win wiLh Burgess second ahead of Santa Rosa, California's Dana Bray. Again Pro purse lured many Professionals out from their winter hi bernation and 19 signed up to battle for over $400. Burgess (Yam 125) put himself into his all-too-familiar position (the lead) at Lhe snap of the rubber band which signaled the start of the 20-lap Open Pro main event, Lhe final race of Lhe evening. Burgess was well on his way to a triple rout of the evening and had only Knox (Kaw 125) to contend wiLh as Medford's Mike Zillgitt (Hon), Hamilton (Yam 250) and Kawasaki-mounted Johnson held down the top five posiLions throughout the 10-rider event.
