VA, MAR. 16 The Virgina Championship Hare Scramble Series held its season opener with over $17,000 worth of contingencies up for grabs at the end of the year. The 14event series is being sponsored by Rocky Cycle Co., Bell Helmets, Hallman Racing Products, MeLZeler Tires, Scott Goggles, Texaco Oil Co. and Lubricants. Over 180 riders from four states converged on the' nine-mile course to rub handlebars with some of the fastest woods riders on the east coast. The Blue Ridge Cycle Club sent the riders out for five loops that took the winners over two and a half hours to complete. Although the sun was shining and temperatures were in the 70s, rain the previous four days left the course in a very slick and challenging condition. Hills, fireroads and stream crossings managed to keep the attention of all when ruts quickly developed that many could not contend with. A good start was the saving grace for many of the riders as bottlenecks quick.Jy developed behind them. The lap times of each rider varied widely as they guessed their way through each loop. Two time Grand Champion David White, sponsored by Rocky and Lubridyne, had to borrow a 250CR Honda after losing his ride on a Yamaha, but showed it was business as usual as he blasted into the lead at the start. At the end of the second lap, KTM rider Roland King wa biting at White's rear fender only four seconds behind. Realizing that the overall was in jeopardy, White picked up the pace just enough to regulate King to second overall by 33 seconds. With White advanced out of class, the 250cc win went to K.ing, while Can-Am/Lubridyne/Marty's Cycle Sales-sponsored Marty Hensley sorted out his first ride on a Can-Am to take second in class and fourth overall ahead of a charging Maico-mounted Mark Rollins. The Open class had the closest action of the day as Mark Maddox on a Marks Power Equip/Lubridynesponsored KTM and Paul Norris on a Cycletronics of New Bern-sponsored Husky duked it out for much of the race. At the checkers, Maddox managed to pull off the win by a minute. Richard Faria has the distinction of riding the only Montesa in the series and rode it to a close third. The riders placed third, fifth and sixth overall, respectively. The 200cc class was left goreen with envy as Mark IV-sponsored Ricky Hilton and Scott/Bare Bros.-sponsored Rick Pino on Kawasakis went heads up during the early portion of the race and became the only riders in the class to go five laps. While in the lead, Pino got off the course while trying to work his way around one of the slimy uphills and lost several minutes trying to get back on course. Hilton quickly took advantage and ' never looked back for the win. Afterwards Pino commented on his side excursion, "I ended up on a really nice trail, and then I realized that it wasn't arrowed. "On the condition of the course he observed, "There's a red bike stuck in one of those mud holes with nothing but the handlebars and two inches of the gas tank showing'" Vic Jordon (Kaw), made his debut into the Senior class a memorable one by leading the first and last lap. His contenders in between came in the form ofa hard riding Jim Thompson (Suz), who came up with a twominute lead on the second lap only to be forced out with a separated shoulder, and then by KTM rider Graham Kenan, who pulled a nine-minute lead on the white [lag lap. But with the win seemingly in sight, Kenan D F. Jordon cruised in for the win, while Suzuki-mounted Jim Bullard slid into second. When contacted later, Thompson said, "My shoulder popped out three times and needs an operation. I will probably be out the rest of the year." Four-stroke action was red hot, as positions continually changed. During the first lap Randy Asbury, Allan Amos and David Newton battled for the lead and came through the barrels only seconds apart. Chris Main managed to move up from midpack and carry the lead going into the last loop, while Asbury dropped off the pace and Newton DNF. Meanwhile, Randy Ashby was also on the move, and when Main encountered troubles, Ashby jumped for the lead while Main was forced to settle for second. While all the action around him was going on, Amos put in the most consistent ride of the field and finished third. Results OVERALL: 1. David Whita (Han). 100: 1. Billy Cox (Han); 2.
