By Daryl Drake BE FIRST! ~~-bY--" Garth Sweetland took his Husky to the win for the second consecutive year at the Arizona Desert Racing Association's Salome 100. Husky-mounted Garth Sweetland grabbed the overall and Open Expert top honors for the second consecutive year at the Arizona Desen Racing Association's Salome 100. Sweetland rode a Desert HusqvamaiSpectro Oil-sponsored 400cc Cross Country at this, the 10th edition of the race, and turned in a time of3:05:37 for his 120-mile run. Off the stan, it was Gary Dircks (Hon) and Mike Powers (Hon) leading the way, with Sweetland working his way up from a second row start. Near the end of the first lap, Powers got off in a sandwash and Sweetland pulled into second. Dircks piued before the home check, but was back on the course ahead of Sweetland. "We ran together mostof the second lap. I caught him in the big wash, passed and led from then on. No falling, no real troubles at all - but it sure was dusty," said the smiling Sweetland at the finish. Dircks finished four minutes behind, but was disqualified for an impound violation. "I don't know how he rides so fast in the dust," Dircks said of Sweetland. Powers was awarded second over- all and the 250cc Expert win, finishing eight minutes behind Sweetland on the Sunnyslope Honda/Premier Cycle/USA Sponswear-sponsored CR250. Jeff Darland (Hon) ran with the leaders until near the end of the last lap when hewentoutaltercatching a rock in his goggles. No eye damage, but he'll have a sore nose. The big winner was Allen Sauerlee, sweeping the 750cc Stock, Modified and Superstreet classes on his new Suzuki GSXR750. The first race for the 750cc pilots was the Stock Production race. The current crop of fast production machines and large contingency purses produced a field of 30 entries. When tbe green flag fell, Daniel Burns shot to the lead, but hal[ of the pack was at his rear wheel. When the leaders emerged from turn six, Mike Glisson had pulled I 0 the£roJ1l on his bright yellow Cycle Imports Suzuki. As they came pa t the start/finish, Glisson and Satterlee were running side-by-side, followed by Craig Seher, Shawn Leopold and Kim Jester. Glisson held the upper hand until the lead 750s caught up to the backmarkers of the Open class; Satterlee got away from Glisson in the traffic. Glisson was occupied for the rest of the race with a continued threat from Seher as they both diced with Open riders. The final order was Satterlee, Seher and Glisson. The same players met again in the 750cc Modified race. Leopold took the early lead with a strong holeshot from the pole position, but Glisson and Satterlee in turn slipped past him. The three bauled for several laps and were soon joined by Seher. The race was cu t short by a red £lag and the final sequence was Satterlee by a wide margin, Glisson, Seher and Leopold. Glisson and Satterlee took their stock machines to battle again in the 750cc Superstreet race. Vince Costa, last year's class champion, took the holeshot on his Kawasaki. Once the bikes had strung out a bit, Costa, Pat Ryan and Satterlee began a dice for the lead. Glisson was in tbe hunt, but had his own dice with Don Canet a few seconds back. The two duels continued untilthecheckeredfiagwhere Satterlee was first across the line, followed by Costa, Ryan, Canet and Glisson. Costa, who also took last season's Formula One trophy, had to fight off multiple challenges to win the Formula One race. The first attempt to get the 40-bike grid away resulted in a false start and a bike down on the grid. The second attempt went more smoothly, and Costa motored into the lead. But after one trip around, Scott Gray had passed Costa as the pack closed in behind him. Gray suddenly pulled off with mechanical problems, and Costa inherited the lead. He also inherited a wheel-towheel dice with Jon Litsey and continuing pressure from Don Canet, Tom Aquino and Paul Gallivan. The two front runners raced wheelto-wheel, lap after lap as they pulled ~away from the field. Those who did
